I am looking to switch.. I mean, I know i'll pay extra, but the screens are amazing on the sony's.

also... the 14.1 inch dell's are about the same size, if not thicker, than the Sony VGN-FZ190, which is 15.4 inches.

i am sick and tired of waiting for dell to fix their issues and i'm so fustrated that i would have to look at a more expensive laptop for the same parts i would get cheaper with dell... but then overall quality of sony is looking better than dell at the moment.

urgh...seriously ive spent hours looking for a laptop..trying to logically think out whats best for my college needs.

At this point in time, I wouldn't suggest Dell if you're going to college in a few weeks. The way things are looking at Dell, you'll be waiting at least a month before you get your notebook shipped.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony makes the batteries in Dell notebooks as well ;)

I have both the vostro 1400 and the Vaio FZ190N4 (although sold the latter).

while the FZ is one of the thinner 15.4" notebooks out there, in the end its still a 15.4" with a profile of a 15.4" despite what they claim. its just lighter.

the Vostro 1400 (which is pretty much the same as the 1420) is thicker.. both are pretty sturdy over all, but I feel that the Vostro is much sturdier. The Vostro has cooler palm rests and the webcam on it is definitely much better.

The Sony on the other hand, has plenty of bloat, and I mean plenty. but its screen is awesome.. one of the best screens I've ever seen. heat is a bit noticeable on the palm rests and battery life is horrible even when doing very little.

i m just on the same dilemma as u duke..im between latitude d830 or d820 and fz190 ..and not decided yet..i ve read all pages of both reviews and it seems dell users had less troubles..with better battery less noise and less bloats and more sturdiness...but still i cant ignore the beauty n lightness of vaio..and maybe the gforce 8400..my brain says dell but my heart says vaio..well if im a smart person i guess i mus go after my brain..i'd be glad if u and other guys bring more proofs for my brain to get vaio.

yes man... just hard to choose!

    Vostro 1400:

pros: cheaper for higher specs. sturdier. less heat, more bat. life.

cons: bulkier, smaller screen (14.1), grainy issue on screens with true life.

    Sony FZ:

Pros: great screen. lighter, thinner. larger screen (15.4)

cons: more expensive for what you get. heat, battery issues.

    URGH!
