    Hello:

I decided to watch a movie tonight on my new 1720. I chose Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, and when watching it, there appears to be a set of black letter-box-type columns on either side of the movie when in full screen mode. Is there any way to get rid of these? If the movie was widescreen formatted for 4:3 I can understand horizontal rows for letterboxes, however, these are vertical.

If not, can somebody suggest an alternative DVD playing program that will eliminate those bars?

Are you sure it isn't part of the movie? I've never heard of anything you are describing. (a screenshot would be nice too)
WMP and Power dvd are populair viewing programs, i never had this problem with those myself.

There are two types of video adjustment alternative to scaling which are usually done to keep the aspect ratio as such but fit the video to the screen size....

Usually when you play a 16:9 movie on a 4:3 screen it will do a letterbox adding black horizontal bars on the top and bottom.....

But when you play a 4:3 movie on a 16:9 (or a 16:10 as with the laptop widescreens) screen you will see a pillarbox which adds black vertical bars on the left and right.... This is what you are experiencing....
