Per title. It's really quite annoying - way louder than it needs to be (especially a problem with headphones or at night in a dorm headphones or not - would be in the library too). Since there's usually some other indication of a problem too, I'd just as soon disable it. I know that means no POST beep codes, but I'm willing to make that trade.
And yeah, a way without physically altering the motherboard would be preferable...

You mean that high pitched "TEEP" sound? I get that on startup because of my Vista Analogue Clock. If that's what it is, then try these steps I discovered myself.
A. Click on Start> In search box, type Device Manager and hit enter.
B. Under View, click "View Hidden Devices".
C. Look for "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" and expand> and then right-click on "Beep" and Disable it.
If you want to disable the Beep and startup,
D. Right Click on "Beep" and select Properties.
E. Under Current Status, Select Stop. (if it's still running)
F. Then on Driver tab, select Disable on startup type.
Reboot.
Let me know if successful.
EDIT: Oh yeah, judging from your sig you're a Windows XP user right? Then ignore step .A and just head on and access the Device Manager via right click My Computer.
Any way to disable motherboard beep (1520)?
