Any updates about the GDDR2 thing guys? Post it and I'll update it in this thread. Also, Since there are so many 1520 orders... Is it possible that we might get a GDDR3 batch?

    Let's hope so..

It wouldn't be right for some people, getting DDR2 in their order and for the same price for others they get DDR3. Dell would be flooded with compensation.

    NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) Go 8600M GT with 256MB DDR3 dedicated graphic memory

That's what it says in my invoice. Hopefully that's what I will get.

I'm afraid Dell dont do the Geforce 8600M GT in DDR3 memory...it stated in my order acknowledgment and Order Confirmation that the GDDR3 memory is the one that i will be purchasing but when i checked my online packing slip it stated quite clearly the GDDR2 memory. plus, the dell website in the UK it does not mention the GDD3 anymore it reverts back to the GDDR2 even in "help me choose" option it states GDDR2 and i paid extra for the GDDR3 which is 47.00 sterling pounds extra than the GDDR2...it looks like Dell will have to compensate for this mistake as I have all the proof regarding DDR3 written in my invoice. I have not received the system yet but i am already disappointed. Now you know why it is called Inspiron it supposedly not have the high end features which is mainly reserved for the XPS range.

i doubt dell had a option for ddr 2 8600gt and a option for ddr3 8600gt which you specifically paid 47 bucks more for.

NO ONE has ddr3 in the notebook from dell

To Hmmm, when i placed the order it stated Geforce 8600M GT 256MB GDDR3 (add extra 94.00) but now it states GDDR2 memory it states (add 47.00). what does that show? i am paying for a system more for the GDDR2 memory in actual fact i should be having the GDDR3 memory but then again i'll state it again once the system arrives then ill have a word with the Dell rep to exactly find out...i have checked USA, UK and NZ website all give now GDDR2 memory. whether this was an error it was a big mistake. it should have been cleared if not a dell rep should contact via email or telephone to explain that you will be receiving GDDR2 memory atleast it could have eased the problem a little. Dell did not state when i placed the order regarding GDDR2 memory at that time the website showed GDDR3 memory. there was no mention what so ever regarding the GDDR2 memory. this came to light when i checked my online packing slip where it stated GDDR2 memory.

The guy I talked to told me that my card would either have 1 slot of 256 mb or 2 slots of 128 mb. I don't know what that means. Is 1 slot GDDR3 (or GDDR2)?

He also said he cannot know for sure until my order ships and has a service code.

I wouldn't ask a mechanic for a medical diagnosis nor would I ask a doctor for advice on fixing my car. And I would definitely not ask a sales rep technical questions. They're trained to answer phones, take your order and up sell you on extended warranties. Hence all the confusion and conflicting responses.

Of course, it's not their fault - they're just doing their job. Dell really needs to step up here and make it clear what they're selling. If these notebooks are shipping, then surely they have to know if it's DDR2 or 3! Come on Dell, it's not that complicated.

excuse my ignorance but how do you acutally know if your card is gddr2 or gddr3? i installed rivatuner and under the main tab it says 128-bit G84 (A2.32sp) with 256mb DDR3 Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT

Rivatuner isnt accurate when describing Vram for laptop cards. Rivatuner was meant for desktops. You can usually tell if its ddr2 or ddr3 by the memory clock speeds. All the 1520's so far memory clock are at 400mhz, when the ddr3 should be 700mhz mem clock.

cause this issue has been discussed so many times in many of the subforums, there was a long discussion about it in the sager forums regarding the 8600gt in the sager2090. Most of the resellers told us that the 8600gt's were DDR2. When some people got their sager 2090's, rivatuner showed DDR3, but the memory was only clocked at 400mhz instead of the standard 700mhz like in the Asus G1S which has been confirmed to be GDDR3.

truthfully i dont know if the dell rep would believe me if i just told them exactly what you just told me. i tried asking for compensation earlier but it seems that the chat rep didnt understand what i was talking about and told me that another rep should call me by tomorrow

He thinks you are talking about the plain ol ram, not the video ram. Thats why he mentioned the to slots. The video ram should be ddr3 while the computer's ram should be ddr2.
