I just received a Vostro 1710 with the 8600 GS video... and there is a new BIOS for it, released on Thursday:
Yes, the spelling error is on the Web site.
I guess they were in a hurry to get that one out there...

I'm sure the "imporvements" will take care of everything!

nvidia wont be doing a recall... they haven't even publicy released a news press release themselves about the GPUs going bad (they only said a certain batch..)

they will lose a lot of revnue thru the recall and future sales

All the update does is speed up the fans early. Basically killing your laptop's battery life to merely prolong how long it'll take for your GPU to die.

Yup, so its a lose-lose situation for the consumer. Less battery life, still possibility of card dying in the future. If it does die, it'll likely die outside of your warranty coverage because of said fans.

But, if it is a recall by nvidia, it shouldn't matter if it is outside dell's warranty.

I highly doubt they will do a recall. They will do their best to whether the storm by forcing all notebook equipped with the defunct line to spin their fans faster. If that doesn't work well enough, they'll probably downclock their chips with new firmware and hope most of the defected cards fail outside of warranty. Making it essentially, cost-free to them.

To do an actual re-call, would likely kill Nvidia as a company, or put them in massive debt.

They are prepping $200 million for repairs and replacements. Any drivers will just force the fan to turn on sooner, which will just delay the inevitable.

but i think that if they dont do a recall or really do anything at all then they will lose a lot of customers for future sales. so its really a lose-lose situation for nvidia too lol.

"Any drivers will just force the fan to turn on sooner, which will just delay the inevitable." Exactly what a company should do to force more gpus to die out of warranty.
