Dell already officially annoubced that the Latitude D430 model will be based on Santa Rosa and will be available within the "next few weeks" (official announcement from Dell made on May 9th here)

Has anyone heard any news or rumors on the specs the D430 will have ? Also what about pricing ?

I need to buy a 12 inch light and power saving notebook soon, and can get the Lat D420 or XPS M1210 today, but if the D430 is really just around the corner (and not terribly expensive) then I'd rather wait for it.

Any help/info will be much appreciated.

Yep .. same here. Looking forward to hearing about the 430 specs, and I'm getting one if they should have decided to ditch the stupid 1.8" HD format.

Couldn't agree more ! I really do hope they start using the 2.5" drives ... even if that means they have to make the D430 a little bit thicker.

I do hope though that they continue to NOT include the optical drive as a permanent built in option. 90% of the time I don't care about the optical drive and would rather not carry the weight around all the time.

I agree. More than half the time I dont really care for the optical drive.

But how heavy is a optical drive? Maybe .5 lb? Maybe it only add to height.

Its not just the weight. Its a pretty good chunk of space that it takes up and its a powered device that drains the battery and adds heat.

That means power and cooling might need to be upgraded.

I wish more laptops had an option to omit the internal optical drive and just use an external one. I only use it to load software and rip CDs, which I really don't need to be able to do while mobile. Even if machine size (dimensions) is not an issue, I would gladly get rid of my internal optical drive to save half a pound.

They are useful if you want to watch DVDs though... I forgot about that. Still, if it was removeable, I could always pop it in when I want to do that.

Hey, with Sandisk releasing a 64GB SSD drive, the D420 may not need that slow 1.8" drive for much longer! :)

Seeing as the M1330 has an LED backlit screen, I would expect the D430 to have one as well.

That would be awesome ! Thinner, lighter, brigheter and more power saving screen ... what more can you ask for :)

Now if someone would just break their NDA and leak some details on the D430 ;)

So it will be announced June 25th, and available July 29th.

It's going to be a tough call between this and the XPS M1330.

I'll probably go with the M1330.

    Thanks for the info.

I think the pricing should stay the same or little cheaper, just like the D630 pricing.
