I just sold an Inspiron 1100 or something that had to be from 2002. Still in flawless condition and had some battery life left.

It's still going strong for its new owner. We also have a ton of them at my job.

It depends what you use it for, how you treat it, etc.

Yea... my friend spilt chocolate milk ALL over her laptop while studying and was FREAKING out when it wouldn't start (thats after I immediately shut it off and left it out to dry for a week). Turned out she had CC and Dell gave her a nice brand new laptop.

I sold a Dell to my grandfather that is now almost two years old, out of the warranty, and has yet to have a single problem. 630m/XPS M140...and it was one of the first 5000 laptops made in that series.

My Inspiron 2500 that I bought in 2000 still works perfectly with 2 batteries that hold full charge and I have never had a problem with it. Barely ever use it anymore...

Well, I'm currently typing on a first generation Pentium M "Banias" Dell, though it is a latitude, so I guess that doesn't count. It's a D400 that I got I believe 5 years ago. The battery only holds about a 50% charge now, but it still works great.

Yes, the warranty can be extended and upgraded as long as your computer is still under warrant at the time of the upgrade. I usually only purchase 1 year of warranty because recently that's about how long I have been keeping the computers. However, if I do decide to keep a certain notebook for longer than a year, I just had to call Dell and order the warranty extension.

Trust me get the warrenty its like 100$.. if u want you can just break it yourself befor it runs out and get a brand new computer... you will be sorry when some drunk moron in your dorm throws it across the room or something stupid like that.. Yea you will take good care of it... but 100$ is nothing compared to what you could spend on accidental repairs..

My Dell Inspiron 7000 with a Pentium II 266MHz processor, 14.1" TFT display, 256MB RAM and 20GB HD lasted me through college from 1998 to 2002. In fact, I found it in one my boxes while moving things around a few months ago and it still runs pretty well for its age.

I've had my laptop for 4 years almost to the day. Had a 3 year warranty that saved my butt last year when the video card crapped out. Needs a reformat, but otherwise still works alright.

buy it using AMEX, 1 year standard warranty turns into 2 year warranty free. 1 from Dell, 1 from AMEX. I think Visa works too

I'm typing this message from a 4yr + old Inspiron 5100, still kicking. I'm gifting it to some friends because I recently purchased a Inspiron 1501 and have on order a Vostro 1500.

I have an old 8100 that has been in service for close to 6 years. A D600 for 3+ years. Where I work C640s and the like can still be seen in use. You can add 2 more years to your warranty before it expires as well.

If the 5 story drop was intentional. No. If it was an accident. Yes.

So, to get things striaght....after I get my lappy, the best thing to do is by the 4yr accidental damage for about $100 and not the 4 year warranty for about $300 and if something stops working like the LCD or gfx card, have an "accident."

Using an Inspiron 9100 since 2003. 2.8GHz Pentium 4. It is very loud because fans are always on, but thats my fault for installing Vista. Sometimes gets slow, but overall its okay, except for problem below. Hopefully next year I can upgrade to one of the notebooks listed below.

Main problem is the screen. When I log on as my brother, everything is good. But when I log on as me, the screem is bright, then dims a couple minutes later. I can still see things on the screen, but it makes my head hurt if I use it for too long, so I have to switch out of my account. I read about the pin being stuck, so it things the screen is closed. I took apart the front of the computer and found the pin, but it was not bent. I have no idea what the problem is.

I have had my Inspiron 1100 since March 2003, and its still fine. I had to do a clean install of XP a few months ago and had to have the screen hinges replaced 6 months after I got it, but other than that, no problems...

I've got a Latitude CpT C on its 8th year and an Inspiron 500m on its 4th year. Both work fine, but have had their harddrives replaced and upgraded; all other components are the originals.

I also have Dimension desktops on their 9th years, but I guess those aren't laptops XD

I still have a creaky Inspiron 4000 (made a mistake saying it was a 4100 in another post) Celeron 800 mhz from 10/01, obviously way out of warranty. It still works and do I use it on occasion and take it on trips.

It is falling apart though as one of the battery retaining latches broke (cheap plastic) and I had some intermittent display backlight outages that went away by themselves. The probs started maybe a year ago.

The two original batteries I bought wore out (not surprising, Li Ion batts don't seem to last that long before wearing out) but the replacements are fine. I'm still on the original 20 gig HD and haven't ever had the unit repaired.

You cannot do that because the $100 extra for accidental care only applies to computer with a valid warranty. So if you stick to a 1 year warranty and then pay extra for accidental care, then both would only be valid for 1 year. In order to get the 4 years of accidental care, you will be to buy the 4 year warranty option.

I've got the wife's old inspiron from 2000 out in the garage. Battery life is certainly reduced but everything still works. I use it to take ECU logs from the car and to surf car forums while doing repairs. I think the only thing that's broken is the cover latch, and that just falls out. I haven't bothered to gorilla glue it back in. In fact, I just took it to Panera last week to do an MBA class cram session (do the entire session's worth of written assignments in one day) and it ran like a champ, running word and firefox. Just stay away from flash stuff, or else it bogs down.
