I just got a scratch and dent(what a joke, I was barely able to find anything wrong with it) D420 from the dell outlet. The audio doesn't work. I tried reinstalling the drivers and that did nothing. Any ideas? Also, does the Windows XP cd from Dell contain all of the crap that comes preinstalled?

Since it is a business laptop, you aren't going to find the usual bloat preinstalled. The image should be pretty clean, but you may have to uninstall one or two business related utilities if you don't want them.

Not too sure about this one...did you try toggling mute a few times? What about the BIOS? Any settings in there that could affect the speakers? Can you get the laptop to even make a system beep (thing a really annoying...deep)? Do the drivers properties show that everything is working or do they indicate a problem?

Well it had 51 processes when I first booted it.

The driver properties show that everything is working properly. I'll check out the BIOS soon. Thanks for the quick reply. ^_^

haha its a dell, did u expect any less?
check device manager, driver verifications, and ultimately the retarted tech support (except ask to be transferred to a higher level person immediately, don't waste more time with the lower level)

Well it works with headphones. Looks like the internal speaker is the problem.

EDIT: I just ran the diagnostic test in the beginning and it did beep.

seems to me like more of a hardware related problem than software but cant be too sure bout it though if you are unable to figure it out by yourself i also suggest calling customer support as stated above
