Ok guys, we all have made some bad experiences with ebay, so I don't really look for the typical advice, but more like have you ever bought an XPS or Inspiron system on dell? there are some really nice deals, such as this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BLACK-Dell-...99317399QQcategoryZ140080QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
so i was wondering, how
a) the guarantee thing works if you buy through an ebay reseller? (if my notebook is damaged i can directly go to dell, right?)
b) can you extend a guarantee if bought on ebay?
c) any experience with being in germany and waranty? (I am a US government employee)
d) anything else, maybe not guarantee related you can share?
thanks!
e) Are there any other great DELL deals out there? Ever had problems with Dell Outlet?
thanks!!

Just be careful. If its is the real Dell Outlet on ebay they do offer you options for purchasing the extended warranty for an extra cost. But I would rather purchase from Dell's online outlet on the Dell website. Yes the price may be more than Ebay but you get full support from Dell. (Not saying that you wont' get support but why take the chance in them saying oh its from ebay we don't service them) Also with the build quality of alot of Dells being not as good as the past you may want to consider an HP Pavillion series. HP has stepped up its game and they offer a cheaper extended warranty with accidental damage protection. You will pay a fraction of the cost and if you get it from the HP site you can custom configure many options. The Dell XPS and line is very nice, the Lattitude line is okay also. I would stay clear of the Inspirion line we have had a few at work that had heating issues.

a) Warranty can be changed to new owner.
b) What? If it's not mentioned in the auction, no.
c) Nope. But you'll need to do an International Tag Transfer.
d) Be sure to do the transaction from within eBay. DO NOT buy the product from the buyer after the auction ends and you are not the winner and he sends you an email saying the original winner bowed out. eBay and PayPal will not guarantee that transaction against fraud.
e) If you can shop at AAFES, have you checked out the deals through AAFES.com's portal into Dell? -
Yeah that is good point WackyT. You can get them cheaper at AAFES. You can also goto the Dell site, the HP site or the Gateway Site and choose federal government then chose the federal employee program which will allow Federal Employees, Military and Veterans to get computers at a very nice discount. You can get a brand new one shipped to you from the manufacture with full warranty and service. That is how I got my Dell Optiplex 745 Desktop.

a) The only way you will be covered for damage is if the notebook has accidental damage protection. Check with Dell to see if you can purchase that coverage and extended warranty [ b) ] separately for an item not purchased directly from them. The rep I spoke with recently said no, but maybe if you talk to the right person?? I've had different experiences talking with different reps.
c,d) A recent thread discussed warranties being unavailable for those outside the U.S., but this would be another question for Dell. -
As a military member sales to APO and us military stationed overseas is still considered US sales since your mail is still routed via US postal system (ie. APO AE is for Europe (Germany) Call dell and they will tell you. I know HP and Gateway do it. When I was stationed at Bad Aibling Station a few years ago near Munich it worked well for me and I was covered under all the warranties. Last year we purchased one while we were in the Netherlnads and Dell did give us the Accidental Damage Warranty

well i got my dell on ebay for a really nice price, i've had no problems with it, i bought this lap top in USA and now im studying in mexico and the warranty still valid as long as you have your service tag i believe

I bought my E1505 on Ebay. Do your homework though. Dell is always offering deals on some model(s) at any point in time. If you go the Ebay route check the feedback of the seller carefully. I never buy any big ticket items on Ebay from anyone that has less than say a 50 feedback rating. Watch the S/H charge too. Ebay is cracking down on ridiculous S/H charges which is good, $40 to ship a laptop UPS ground is criminal. As soon as I got my laptop I transfered ownership via Dell's website and beefed up the warranty. Get complete care coverage if it doesn't come with it.
