Technically they both work the same. They both work in the 802.11a/b/g WiFi bands upto 54Mbps, and they are both come as a PCI-Express MiniCard format.

The only difference is that the Dell TrueMobile 1490 uses a Broadcom chipset, and the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG uses an Intel chipset. Also, in order for your notebook to be qualified as a "Centrino" system (and get the fancy Centrino sticker on your palmrest) you'll have to order your system with the Intel WiFi card (along with an Intel Processor such as the Pentium M, Core Solo, Core Duo or Core 2 Duo, and an Intel motherboard chipset such as the 855/915/945 series).

Bottom line is, they both work the same, so on a budget system like the Inspiron 1300, go for whichever one's cheaper (and the "Centrino" branding/labeling doesn't make your system faster or better, its just a purely marketing endeavour by Intel)
