Any Vostro 1700 WUXGA owners here?

Today I got authorization to return my Vostro 1500 with grainy AUO WXGA+ screen. This screen is grainy, has uneven lighting, light bleeding, poor color saturation and poor sharpness. I realized this once I went to compare screens on notebooks at Staples and even the $500 Laptops were clearer than my Hi-res Vostro screen. But I really like everything else about the Vostro.

So I'm giving the Vostro another chance. I just ordered a Vostro 1700 with WUXGA (1900X1200). It seems like there have been good success stories here with that configuration.

Can any Vostro 1700 owners with the WUXGA screens vouch for how good (or poor) they are?

Mine's okay... it's a little grainy but I don't notice it and it doesn't bother me. View angle's pretty crud though... the brightness changes drastically. Mine's a SEC screen though.

Hey Scorp1on, that wasn't what I wanted to hear about the WUXGA being grainy and with viewing angle's. The Vostro 1700 WUXGA doesn't sound any better than the 1500 WXGA+ that I'm returning!

It's been a week since you've wrote your review of the 1700. So, do you have any second thoughts about getting the 1700? The WUXGA?

I have an SEC screen on my 1700 and I don't think it's grainy at all. It's smoother looking than any other LCD I own. I also don't have much of a problem with the viewing angle, but I don't really look at it much from the side.

The only problem I had was a bad 8600 that would overheat after gaming for about 15 to 20 minutes. Dell support came out the next day after I called and replaced it. I had to show the tech how to take it apart and caught him putting back together incorrectly twice. He as a really nice guy, I just don't think they have done much training in the field on the Vostro. Anyway, the notebook has been perfect since. No overheating, no problems at all.

Oh, one more thing. I put in a 7200 RPM drive and a fresh install. It's much faster now. The speed increase may be due to the fresh install, but I'm sure the drive didn't hurt. The nice thing is if you purchase the second bay caddy, you can put in the 5400 RPM drive for more space.

It's a really nice notebook, I think you'll like it. Just remember that a 17 inch notebook is giant and doesn't travel all that well.

Can you tell me where you got your second bay caddy from?

    Thanks
