I'm thinking about picking up a Vostro 1400. However, I seem to be reading a lot of panel issues, especially with WXGA+. Graininess, brightness, etc. and the eternal search for an LG. I'm satisfied with WXGA resolution, so do similar issues apply with the 1280x800 panels Dell use?

Read the stickies. No new threads on grainy screens.

    you'll be fine.

1280x800 seems to be good screens. AUO, SEC, and all other brands, I've seen many and all look fine.
It's the higher resolution where problems start so dont even worry.

    order it, and enjoy it.

I've never had a problem with graininess on my vostro 1400 with AUO 1440x900 screens. In fact, I've had two different AUO 1440x900 screens: I had it replaced for another defect. However, I've found yet another non-graininess related problem on my 2nd AUO screen, a small chip in the glossy coating. I was just wondering what kind of WXGA+ (1440x900) screens do the latest vostro 1400's have and what I can expect with a replacement screen? How is the brightness, viewing angles, etc.... are there any new issues that have come up? Thanks!

I did read the stickies. The thread seems primarily address WXGA+ and to a much lesser extent WXGA. I've ran forum searches and found little information in regards to WXGA, so I decided to make a direct post. In terms of the graininess issue, I'm interested which WXGA panels are affected (I would presume different from WXGA+) and recent trends of the probability of getting a grainy lcd. Also my concerns include other things besides just graininess like brightness, color quality, backlight bleeding, etc.

Thanks. I guess the overall lack of threads (aka complaints ;) ) about the WXGA means they're generally good.
