My new E1505 came with a 3 year subscription to Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007. About 3 weeks ago I purchased Norton Antivirus 2007 (1 year subscription) for my desktop. I'm about to reformat and reinstall Vista on my E1505. Which antivirus program would you recommend I use? I'm really not concerned about spam, ad-ware and other misc. things. I'm more concerned about Trojan horses, viruses and other things of that nature.
Right now my memory usage (RAM) is at 700MB with no programs running according to task manager. Which program would use the least amount of resident memory? How much memory will be freed up by a clean install of Vista? Thanks!

I think Norton is more resource intensive than Trend Micro.

The non-corporate version of Norton is terribly inefficient, so I'd use trend on the laptop.

I'd recommend neither and use NOD32, it is (in my opinion) THE BEST anti-virus program on the market. I've never had such a light-weight program do so well in terms of protecting my machine. It is about the same price as Norton ($40) but $28 for a yearly renewal.
eset.com is where you can get it. -

well well i really dont like norton or pc cillin, norton takes to much resources from your computer and will slow it down currently im using kaspersky and its pretty cool, im loving it!!

PvD I've heard some good things about kaspersky.... does it have a built in firewall as well ? where do you download it from?
-
avg free is awsome.
and FREE. -
Antivir - http://www.free-av.com/
Avast - http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html (requires free registration)
AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
ClamWin - http://www.clamwin.com/ (does not offer real time protection)
Comodo - http://www.antivirus.comodo.com/ -
I use trend and have not had any problems with it -

I can't say anything about Trend since I have not used it...
But I dumped Zone Alarm Suite for the Norton Internet 2007 and I am happy with Norton.
I guess older versions of NAV have been pretty bad system hogs - but it appears they got their act together with the recent versions and are getting good reviews.

every A-V are crap imho. The worst I've tried is NOD-32. Terrible ressource hog and would miss any basic virus out there. I think Avast is the lesser of the worse. For the OP, Norton are the biggest bloatware on the market, Trend might be ok for you. Or why don't you just use common sense and just don't open anything you see that you don't know where it come from or don't open any executable from your friends neither. I've been doing that from day 1 and never had anything.

I'd go with Norton

Another vote for Trend after being a long time user of NAV, their recent products the last 3 years have suck up resources as much as their product & servoce just plain sucking. McFeces has decided to follow NAV to suckville by creating and forcing users to upgrade to their '07 edition. Trend Micro allows users to install, FOC, onto 2 additional comps (3 total) - their ease of use, reliability and overall end-user friendliness compels me to recommend it over NAV. Trend Micro also offer a superior customer support service to NAV.

One thing I have found is that an agreement on the "best" anti virus program is next to impossible. Each anti virus review site will have a different ranking of its best choices. Individuals will also have their own preferences, as you can tell from this thread. The best option would be to check some review sites and other forums and get an overall view of which anti virus programs generally receive the most praise.
You also need to determine what is most important in an anti-virus for you, whether it be low memory usage, frequent updates, cost, interface, heuristics, or its ability to catch viruses.
For me personally I use NOD32. I stay away from Norton Anti-Virus and McAfee as well as I find them to slow down my system. Removing the trail of McAfee from my Dell system noticeably sped up my system. I have tried both AVG and Avast in the past and have been pleased with their performance. But again that is my opinion only. -
Norton is the more secure one between the two, but thats the worst resource hogging AV program out there. I personally will never buy nor recommend any Norton products, but given your situation norton seems the better choice. However I dont know the performance (resource consumption) of Trend.
I currently use Kaspersky, last year used NOD32, both of them are quite good and highly recommended. -
Honestly, I've been using Norton AV 2007 for quite a few months on my Inspiron 640m (now running with Vista) and I haven't had a single complaint. The resource hog is not that bad ... the Norton process only uses about 6 MB of system memory

for those interested on Kaspersky here is the download link

Thanks for everyone's input. I went Trend Micro simply because I had a 3 year license versus a 1 year. When I reinstalled Vista and the AV program, I did the minimal install. Takes up less memory and keeps things a little more streamlined. Once again, thanks for everyone's input.

Mine came with the PC-Cillin. After reformatting and reinstalling the os I went with Kaspersy. I had been using Norton AV for over 10 years.
