I currently have a Inspiron 4100 laptop that I've had for 4+ years. I've treated it like a dog. Not really, I love my dog, see avatar, he's a brittany, but you get the idea. I recently ordered the 1520 in my sig because I needed a dvd burner and the extra muscle to create and edit video's. Otherwise, the 4100 would be just fine for word processing, some picture pp, and surfing the net, overall it's been great.

The oldest laptop I've seen that works like new except for it's battery, is a 6+ year old Thinkpad w/ win98 at work. Funny, because a coworker in our office just got a new replacement but still finds time to use it.

My question is: How long do any of you anticpate keeping or what is the longest you've ever used the same Dell laptop?

I'll be using mine for 4+ years at least.

1.5-2 years max, than i'm getting rid of it. if i stick with my laptop for 4 years, it would have almost 0 resell value. if i sell it in 1.5-2 years I can probably recoup 50-70% of its value.

I've had the laptop in my sig for over a year at this point, and it still performs admirably. I need it to last for me til I finish college in 2010, so yeah, probably looking for something new then. I think it should be able to get me through.

I hope mine will keep running for at least 6 years. But I don't expect it to be anywhere near top of the line for most of that time and I do expect I'll have to invest in a new battery.

3yrs max, then might move back to a desktop. I like both and have been alternating for years now. Portability vs Price-Performance. They are like night and day... and you know, I like both, so its hard as hell to chose between.

I'm hoping to use the laptop I just bought for a good 3-4 years. I find that's an acceptable time for me to justify buying a new system.

It comes with a 3-year warranty, so at least 3 years. Probably 4ish.

My experience with computers is that they become obsolete first before they actually become broken. I've changed many laptops in the past, but all of them were fine when I replaced them. I think technology catches up with electronics faster than actual wear and tear.

That said, I still use a Dell from 2004 for work, which is happily running in the bedroom btw as an email sorter while i'm out on vacation this week. Can't get rid of that thing, even if I try! Those 630's at work look mighty fine but I ain't getting one because we don't lease our machines.

    Regards,
    P

I bought my Vostro as a cheap solution until Penryn and Montevina, so it'll do for the next year.

I am currently building a desktop to replace my 7 year old Dimension that still works. It would be pretty sweet if my laptop lasted just as long

I'm using my Thinkpad I bought on Sept 10, 2001, paid $3200. Ouch : ) . Just ordered my first Dell on 8/2. Still in build stage. We'll see how long it lasts.

My 9300 is about 3 years old now, and my 700m is 2 years old, and are still working fine (touch wood)

I have seen 6 year old laptops that are still going strong, runing just office applications.
