So I'm patiently awaiting my new XPS 1330, and of course I'm second guessing every option.

One of those options is that the XPS comes with a 15 month subscription to McAfee. I have Norton Antivirus on my current computer right now, and it's a hog, and it takes forever to load and saps every ounce of my cpu's power. I'm guessing McAfee will be very similiar.

Should I call Dell and tell them not to preinstall any antivirus software, and what free Antivirus programs should I get instead?

Or should I just leave McAfee since its a 15 month subscripiton free?

well, you could leave the free subscription and take the 15 months to shop around and find a replacement you want. I've had the McAfee that Dell sends you on my laptop and let me tell you it was a pain. everytime I did something somewhat out of the ordinary it asked me if I wished to continue or allow said action. and it took a long time to load everything. However that's just my experience, some people swear by McAfee. I myself am a Symantec System Works and Antivirus guy myself. But I get it free from my Uni. It's about a $100 investment to get started otherwise and at least $40 every year after to keep it. Some free AV programs to consider are Avast and Free version of AVG. I found Avast to be the better of the two.

hope this helps in one way or another.

McAffee is a huge resource hog, as well as Norton.Decent free AV programs that don't use too much memory are Avast ( http://www.avast.com/) and Antivir ( http://www.free-av.com/)

McAfee and Norton are both resource hogging Antiviruses. I'd recommend either getting NOD32 or Kaspersky.
They are both great antiviruses to use and they don't kill your resources.

I've tried McAfee, Norton, Pc-cillin and Kaspersky. McAfee and Norton are indeed resource hogs. I'd recommend either Pc-cillin or kaspersky.
    Pc-cillin is very unobtrusive.
Kaspersky is more configurable but it takes time to train it properly.
    Both work well.

Well, I would really recommend getting Kaspersky or NOD32 if you want serious AV protection. The free ones can sometimes be good, but none of them match NOD or Kasper.
