I am looking into buying a 1405. Just customized a model on the dell site, and it says "TrueLife™ offers up to a 10% higher contrast ratio than the same display with an anti-glare coating." For some reason, I don't remember seeing the anti-glare coating before, is this new? Or has it always been there? Thanks.

The anti-glare coating is just the matte screen - the basic one offered without TrueLife.

Like Matt stated, the anti glare is the matte screen. For whatever reason, dell isn't offering on their website on the high end configuration for the E1405. If you select one of the lower end configuration, you get the option for the matte screen.

The matte screen will be dull, and the natural resolution is 1400 by 900. If you go with the Truelife screen, the screen will reflect more and the text will be smaller if you go with the natural resolution (1920 by 1200).

If you aren't sure on which screen you would like, go to a computer store, and check out the glossy laptops vs. matte laptops. You should be able to notice a huge difference. Glossy laptops will show your reflection. Truelife won't be exactly the same as what you see in the computer store, but it will be similar.

truelife is the glossy screen, but different manufacturers have different quality of screens. EX: sony has some of the best glossy screen on their laptops, so if you compare that to a truelife - you'll get the idea of what a glossy screen would be like, but don't expect dell screens to be as good as what Sony is.

All glossy screens are the same in terms of what they are, but are different in quality. Glossy screens are reflective, bright, higher resolution etc. If you get truelife, you'll get all of those things, but it might not be as good as what other manufacturers have.

I used to have Sony Vaio with Xbrite technology. I compared it to my roomate's Gateway ( i cant tell what the model is) and i didnt find a noticable difference between them. Also i've only seen the TruLife technology on DELL's 700m and it was awesome.
But since then i've read in this forum that Trulife differes in dell's models. Many screens of dell's notebooks come from various manufacturers ( AUO, Samsung, LG , etc.) with obvious difference

If they had 700m's screen in I9400 (or anything bigger than 700m) I would get it in no time, but.. it is only on 700m at this point AFAK.

I love the true-life screen, but it also does put a glare on the screen in a well lit room.
