Another quality issue with Dell..Inspiron XPS

Well, I'm becoming more and more concerned with Dell's quality...

Apparently, several users who recently orderd the Inspiron XPS are having a lot of problems with their systems. Apparently, it will lock/freeze up fairly regularly when playing games (isn't that what it was designed for???). Could be a video card issue or heat problem.

Once again, Dell seems to rush out new lines without really working out the kinks!

I dont claim to know alot about the gaming world as of late but my brother used to work for LucasArts as a game tester in the mid to late 90s. Like when I bought my laptop in 98 which then was a full blown machine. He told me about his job which was basically to try to make the games crash so the writers could write more code to avoid the crashes. Well he tested on all sorts of platforms but he said they didnt really bother with laptops cause theyre were too many issues out of their control on standards of parts and compadibility
and power in laptops. Now I know laptops are now very close to desktops in power lately but there still may be issues that are more about the games than the laptops themselves right?? I mean its wrong of Dell to market a laptop for games like the XPS if its not really gonna work but unless the game companies have changed their policies, isnt it possible that just cause one laptop suddenly is for games, it doesnt mean the games are ready for laptops..
I could be way off here as perhaps Dell specifically had companies test their games on this machine or whatever. Perhaps the gaming companies are now really testing on laptops but in the late 90s, lucasarts' policy was to not even really deal with laptops in working out bugs or crashes.
But its just a thought.

I also think that you cant blame every crash on the maker of the system. I mean there are so many things that crash a machine that is not related to the maker of the machine. Some people may not have any trouble with a laptop but they may not be using it as hard or complicated as another user.
I work on a very powerful mac with heavy audio editing software in my job. To many its probably a screaming machine. But we crash about every day.
I dont blame mac. (and hell I jump at any chance to blame mac for anything. [8D] )

Yes I too am buying my 9100 with the intent on being able to play some of the current games. When I bought my last laptop, that was not the case even though it was top of the line for the day.
I too hope for everyone the bugs can all get worked out with time.
Every time the music and TV business switches to new Macs or new versions of the popular Pro Tools editing software, theres usually a month or 2 of EVERYONE having problems but with some time issues get worked out.
Hell my laptop crashed majorly several times when I first got it. Had to replace the HD first year. But in the end, it ended up being a good machine with 6+ years of hard use. I back up stuff fairly regularly and never lost anything major.
I guess working in a world using computers really hard and having years of dealing with crashing on so many top of the line computers makes me a little more used to it than someone that only uses their new home system and perhaps an office system using office type programs that are probably pretty stable.
And Im new to Dell so Im not in the know of their quality ups or downs. There are a lot of people talking lately of a drop in quality so they must be on to something.

Dave, you make a very good point. And I completely agree with you.

Really, most games are not built or tested on laptops.

Although I do think there might be an issue with Dell's system since the same thing keeps happening (i.e., computer will freeze after 30 mintues of gaming, no matter what game being played) to different users.


I just hope that the users who specifically buy these machines for gaming can have an enjoyable experience.

And let's hope I'm wrong...maybe it's not an issue with Dell!

Here users that have experienced these problems discuss working with DELL and how they have come to part of a solution for the problem. Mainly having their bad 9700 ATI cards replaced. Very good read though and very intuitive.
