So, I had been trying to decide between a dell 9100 and 8600, and I had recently decided on the 9100, knowing that it will probably be more reliable, and just overall a better piece of hardware. But, I just recently stumbled on the new dothan pentium m processor. It has a 2 mb L2 cache. How much better is this new processor than the old M's, with only 1 mb of cache? Can anyone compare this new processor for me with a pentium 4, say, 2.8 ghz with ht? Is it worth getting that 8600 now as a better value than the 9100?

If you are planning to bring your laptop on the go, definitely opt for the 8600 which has equivalent power to a P4 in a mid-level configuration. Battery life will be much better and the laptop is a bit thinner and lighter. If you want to play games or if you aren't lugging your notebook around, the 9100 is still a better choice at this point with the better graphics card and sturdier build.

A 1.8 ghz pentium M would be about equal with a 2.8ghz pentium 4. The pentium M is better designed for math operations like shading, rendering, and encoding. I have a 1.8ghz pentium M and it seems faster than my 2.6ghz pentium 4.
