Well, finally got my 1530 today. Looks like new. T9300, 200GB (7200), 4GB RAM, Vista Ultimate. It did arrive without the travel remote, and it took some convincing to get customer support to agree to send me one. As of now I am going through Les's Reformat and Bloatware Removal. The DVD drive is a bit noisy on initial disk insertion, but seems fine during operation, so that may be a normal "feature" of slot loads that I need to get used to.

Great looking computer, and very light.

Question on this reinstall. The Audigy software edition wants audio drivers installed before it will complete. What do I need, the sigmatel drivers? Thanks.

What is the "travel remote"? Is it supposed to come with all XPS 1530s?

Thanks. I expected this might be the case.

In spite of the headache Dell customer service has been, I'm pretty excited about getting this laptop going.

Ok, Windows is reinstalled and everything seems good. Ths noise from the DVD drive concerns me. If it's like that the whole time it's spinning, I can't imagine watching a movie on it. Is this typical.

Also, I'm supposed to have an LG screen, but evne when I first unboxed it device manager listed at as a "Generic PnP". Should their be a seaprate driver for the monitor?

    Thanks.

You can look into video card's properties and find out the LCD specs. It should be there.

As for noise, It should be normal. Out of all laptops I have used, I never used one that does NOT make noise.

The LG screen is listed as LPLD or something. If not, you probably have another manufacturer. I have the same HDD and it's noisy too, but it doesn't bother me while watching movies or playing games.

Ah, cool. I was expecting to see it under device manager in the monitor section.

As for the DVD noise, that could be. I'll have to pop a DVD in and play it and see what it does. The primary noisiness seems to be when it first spins up to speed.

The hard disk is quiet. It's the slot load that gets noisy when a DVD spins up.

My disk drive is extemely noisy so i phone up dell earlier and an engineering is arriving on fri to fit a new drive. Wehn i rang up i held the phone to the disk drive and the woman had no questions about the drive from then on, she just arranged for an engineer to come out.

Its the DVD drive which is making the noise, and its the Optiarc drive.

I might have to do that, then, if it turns out to be a constant problem.

OK, seems like the noisy DVD is only at spinup on certain disks, so I'm happy to have received a well set up notebook.

    Still not seeing the monitor listed in device manager;

    1 XR859 MODULE..., LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WSXGA+, LGP, M1530

Above is what's listed as the system specs. Is there a driver that I'm overlooking?

edit: never mind. Just saw the line I'd overlooked in the Top 10 post. Definitely an LG.
