Blew up or just caught on fire? If it really blew up, then wow whats going on with Dell.
-
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
I'd bank on that,....I've got some ocean front property in atlanta, its a steal.....
-
is it the batterys causeing that?
-
-
Thats very strange , I seldom heard any laptop blew up but recently I've already heard 2 blew up and both of them are DELL
Whats going on DELL? -
thats not very reassuring lol i just bought a dell >.<
-
me too! what caused the blow up?
-
I saw it when the pics were still up... its great. It was caused by the battery. It seems that it did explode since the monitor that was next to where the laptop used to be had a very black charred spot on it which was way higher than where the laptop would've been. The laptop was not being used when it happened, its owner was far away, and its lid was actually closed. The whole (big) office was filled with smoke. Must've been one serious explosion/fire. Good thing fire extinguishers were nearby.
Yes, both (or all 3) of the recent fires/explosions were with Dells, but if one considers Dell's market share, I don't think it's an epidemic that current/future Dell owners should worry about...

These new LI-ION batteries have very high power density. Apple has some bad press as well with their Sony made batteries.
As I posted before, I'm waiting for the next wave of {possible} travel restrictions. When you pull out your laptop at customs you are made to pull your battery and place in metal fire box to be returned at destination.
There is a news picture on the Web where batteries are blamed in a fire that destroyed a cargo jet.
I know all this sounds a bit anal but I have seen Gel Cell battery fires in our equipment at work, not pretty. -
The burned battery was put in the trash can so fast, it melted it

The people are so lucky that they didn't put their laptop on their lap.

scary stuff. what if it happens on a plane or something?
-
looks like a latitude
-
Re it happening on a plane... Yeah that's what one of the users in that forum was saying. I'm on 20-25 planes a year, travelling between Italy and the US... next time I see a Dell, I'll order a double Vodka, I'm telling you.

wow. just wow.
-
wow, thats the battery that blew for sure

Many know the recent problems DELL has with batteries
After considering DELL's market share with millions of notebooks sold and only a handful of such cases reported, this is nothing to create a panic over.
BUT if you do want to know if your battery could be one of the bad ones (I surely wanted to), here is a link to the Dell battery recall program, where you can easily find out:
www.dellbatteryprogram.com
Hope this helps ya'll -
I've merged all of the laptop blowing up threads together. I'm also going to sticky this for the week so that we don't have a ton of threads created.

ok coolio but could you change topic to something like (find out if your battery is one of them).. so ppl know that here is a link to go to and see if so
-
Wow that picture is a bit scary. My friend has a insperion 2200, which is what the notebook in the picture looks like...If it blows up ill get pictures and post them here...
[EDIT] Ok well after looking at the dell site that shows affected systems the insperion 2200 isnt one of them. But its still very similar to the one in the picture so theres still hope that my friends old notebook will blow up he has horrible luck. -
Hate to say it, but it happened YET AGAIN:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/31/dell-laptop-number-3-explodes/
This time in Singapore, a Latitude D410....

oh sh!t how can 3 happen in a row and all from dell
im worried about my e1705, what if it blows up when im on plane !@#$ -

I read that there is magnesium alloy in Dells to make them stronger. I'm thinking that something in the battery overheated or shorted, igniting the magnesium. (Remember the magnesium strips in chem class?) Just a hunch, though.
-
The best part is this horrifying idea that a laptop might explode on an airplane while someone is innocently playing Minesweeper. Coming next: the FAA bans laptops on airplanes, air traffic collapses and video conferencing soars.
-
Yeah I remember the magnesium strips in chem. class, (only 2 years ago) but It looks like its only the battery thats blowing up, not the whole case. Besides I think the alloy in the cases are different so they would react less to stuff like that. I hope atleast, since my notebook case is about 99% magnesium, excpt for some trim and port covers, and the keyboard/screen casing.
Great now I feel like im carying a hydrogen and heat producing bomb. The magnesium reaction created hydrogen right? I remember collecting the gas and then then blowing it in dish soap to create hydrogen bubbles, and then lighiting them on fire in class, that was one of the best labs ever! -
It looks like a magnesium burn... did they say if there was a hole in the table? But then again, I've never seen a battery lit on fire, so it's hard to compare. And yeah, since it's an alloy, it's probably much more stable. Wouldn't be too worried about hydrogen unless you're submerging your laptop in water for like a week

Laptop burnt up, got doused with fire extinguishers, got thrown outside the building onto concrete,.... AND THE HARDDISK WAS JUST FINE !!!!!!!
Dam, thats amazing -
Im just happy this is older model systems. With the fluffy carpet in my house, if mine caught on fire my whole house could go up in flames. Boy I wonder what dell would give me if my notebook burned my house down?
-
How fluffy is your carpet? I used to have one that was 3"... 3 inches!! Oh green carpet, I miss you!

Not to be rude to anyone on here, but I'm really kinda sick of hearing all this battery exploding stuff. These are old Dell laptops, one of them was using a non-Dell battery, and it's only 3. Dell is probably the number one selling laptop company in the U.S. and has been for a while. If 3 explode... so what? What do you expect when you stuff a 9-cell lithium ion battery into a computer that's less that 1-1/2" thick and then don't allow the fans to come on? That stuff gets hot. Certainly, most people don't expect their notebooks to explode on them, but it's bound to happen at some point. And let's not forget that Apple has had problems with their batteries and even MacBook Pro owners getting burned, but where are the ten threads a day on that? Sometimes I think that people just want to beat up on Dell cause they're popular. Just my 2 cents.

Just to bash another company up, my neighbor had a problem with his HP laptop - the ac source was not connecting to the laptop- some problem with the connector I guess. So he calls them up, and they said they might have to reformat the HDD (WTF ???), anyway, they sent him a box to mail the laptop in, they "repaired" it and sent it back. HDD has been reformatted, but laptop still wont take AC power.
Frikkin morons those HP people. -

holy ****, I know whats going on.. it's Al Quaida!
they've been secretly infiltrating dell HQ in china (where all dells are manufactured) and are sabotaging them batteries on purpose!!
talking about weapons of ass destruction! -
Also not to be rude, but from the quantity and quality of some of the postings in this thread people dont have anything else to talk about.
Seriously....4 pages of comments about a laptop that was made how long ago???? 4 pages about a laptop that caught fire and of those 4 pages how much actually added some substance to this thread. How many of us are even running that same laptop or have the same type of batteries in our laptops.
The initial info is quite interesting and informative, but when you look at how many laptops Dell has ever manufatured....even if 500 melted like that I dont think statistically any of us here has anything to worry about. -

The Inquirer says that the Mac on fire looks much better -
From the producers of "Snakes on a Plane" comes a terrifying sequel...
"LAPTOPS ON A PLANE!"
Coming soon to a flight near you.
Another Dell blows up...
