    Hey all,

First off I apologize if this is discussed anywhere else, but I have searched the forum pretty extensively.

I've got a Inspiron 9300 with the UXGA screen. I like the screen and am learning to deal with the small type. The only problem I am now experiancing is the fact that when I visit certain webpages (see www.nba.com or www.thehungersite.com) the webpages load only in the far left side of the browser and leave almost half the browser on the right totally blank. Meanwhile other websites (such as this one, notebookreview) loads perfectly normal and fills the whole browser.

Is this something I can somehow change or is it in the design of the website? It's just rather annoying that I have a 17" screen yet can only read certains websites (IE: news at www.nba.com) on half of it.

Thanks in advance all and God's blessings,
    - J

Have a look at this. What you are experiencing is normal for ANY high res screen be it wide or not!

Thanks everyone. I figured it was in the design, but I was just curious as I thought I rememebred viewing the www.nba.com site when I first got the computer two days ago and was able to view it normally. I must have been mistaken. I was thinking it was a setting that I tinkered with and it was the cause. I just wish it was at least centered, it's a pain to have to read websites from the left side of the screen.

Heartofgold - Yep, same site. I visit all 6 daily and click on the link.

Thanks again everyone, guess I'll have to learn to deal with it.

***EDIT: Qwester: I read that link you provided. It sounds similiar except those people are complaining about it being centered but not taking up the whole screen. I do not mind as much if this is the case, but when I load sites like www.nba.com it loads them aligned to the left side of Internet explorer (or firefox, et cetera). Is there anyway to have it auto center. It's just weird having to read from the side.

    Thanks again

    - J

Don't worry about it Heart there was no offence taken. I always just start with the basics when trouble shooting, unless the original poster stated that they had already covered the basics.

I do tech trouble shooting over the phone at work, and I will start off by asking “is it plugged in?” occasionally. Some people get upset that I would ask such a question maybe hurting their pride, but you would be surprised how many times the simple stuff fixes the problem.

    Flyrooster,
No! He's not retarded and I've gone through this before with him. He's not playing around either. He really truly doesn't understand for obvious reasons you can hear in his words. There are problems! He's not joking or playing so he didn't understand your words. There's no doubt he got scared off because he doesn't have the mentality or ??? (I don't want to put anyone down.. It's not why I'm saying this). You can fill in your own perception/words. I don't want to say something hurtful. I thought that discretely you would understand what I was trying to say! Do you understand in more detail now ?

Yes, I understand, hopefully he will take your advice and when the time is right he can delve into the wonderful world of refomatting.

From some of the other posts I've read, it seems as though you still do not hve your issue resolved with your 9300 - is that true? Are you waiting for a replacement or what? Is your connection at Dell helping at all? It is extremely disheartening to think that you got one and weren't happy with it after so many of your online friends were. I love mine - it's exactly what I wanted and I've never had a single issue with Dell when I've had a problem, so I hope the situation gets resolved to your satisfaction. Yes, you could go to another brand and get something comparable, but not for the same money, which is one of your considerations. The guy I work with got a Hypersonic with all the bells and whistles and paid about $3500, but it doesn't really do much more than my 9300 does plus its louder, heavier and gets hotter.

OK then do you want to have the simple solution to all your microscopic browser problems? [ ;)]

Go to fatwallet.com - search the hot deals forums for Opera (...a web browser).

There is a link to a German PC site that has a free download of the browser and a free key that will be emailed to you upon registration.

Why do I want to do that you might ask??? [:0]

Well Opera unlike any browser I have ever used has an intelligent feature known as a ZOOM function [^]

Now you can fill your hi-res screens up with whatever webpage you are looking at [ :)]

I've just started using it and no complaints at all so far.

Tell it like it is...NOT how it should be :)

    Flyrooster or GTD2000,

Either one of you if you can make it simplified, please explain what it is you are exactly talking about. You have both confused me with one conflicting issue. Is this through the "opera" browser which seems to be what Gtd2000 is stating to go to and download?

Never mind I just figured out that "flyrooster" you are saying that " flashpeak slimbrowser" is a different browser all together that you are using (never heard of it...until now). I thought that you were both referring to Opera but Flyrooster's comment didn't quite seem to state that he was using Opera.

Now all I have to say is that IE has a zoom feature also! I personally am used to IE but wouldn't mind running several browsers as long as I know that it wont cause a problem. If I chose "only" Opera for example ,there are problems with certain website compatibility issues. That's why I would like the choice of switching to whichever one I want.

After I get my computer situation resolved (this has been since 4/12)I've been researching this for a couple of months (the browsers) already deciding on Firefox. But I need more information for me!

Anyway, I figured out my original question while I was writing it.
I still have to mention that IE has a so called "zoom" feature.

    H/G -

There used to be viewing issues with some alternative browsers; I know that Opera had issues several years ago when I first tried it, but I think the playing field is much more level now. I have tried Firefox and didn't like it, which surprised me because of all the rave reviews I've seen. Maybe it's just because SlimBrowser hasn't gotten the exposure.

There's no harm in you experimenting with them all to see which you prefer; You can choose whichever one to be your default browser and, unlike IE, you can uninstall them if you wish. I NEVER use IE because of all the security issues and the fact that there's no built-in pop-up blocker. I've not had any issues with web pages not looking right either. Slimbrowser has been the easiest and most user-friendly browser for me.

    Flyrooster,
I know for a fact that their stil are some broswing issues . I did want to mention that with SP2 I don't get pop ups! Also due to my Security/ Antivirus settings and a couple of other things.

I wanted to reply back real quick before I walk out the door in 2 seconds. Out of curiousity I want to check out your browser....do I need a special link? If so , do you mind me asking for it ? I'm sure I'll find it but if you have a direct link ,I wouldn't mind and I'll bet other people will check it out!

    Thank You ,

Certainly - you can find it along with a lot of information at http://www.flashpeak.com.

If there are any browsing issues with SlimBrowser I'm not aware of them, but there could be some when it comes to certain IE functions, mainly due to Microsoft-specific coding.

I dunno, I tried Opera, but I find I like Firefox more.

So nowdays 99% of the time I use Firefox to browse, the other 1% is when the webpage doesn't display 100% correct -- for example the "sports" tab under Yahoo doesn't work fully under Firefox, it's probably an IE specific function call -- which sucks.

I'm curious to see IE7 thou, but as long as the browser is so integrated into the o/s (i.e. IE), it will NEVER be that secure.

    cheers,

heart I think that what you are refering to is text size in IE. right?

but what gtd2000 is talking about is a zoom in function, as in even pictures and graphics in the page are enlarged. It's just like magnifying everything within the browser's window.

Personally I use firefox and I avoid the whole stretching webpages issue by not having my browser window maximized. It just sits to one side of the screen. I actually like it this way, I can have winamp and my instant messenger running in that extra space on the side, and I can always keep an eye on them all the time.

Heart, I was not attacking you! Where did you get that idea from! I was just trying to clarify what gtd2000 was talking about. I just thought there was a misunderstanding on your part of what gtd2000 was talking about, and I was trying to clarify. If I was wrong in thinking that there was a misunderstanding you could have just said that in a little bit more civil way!

What business do I have of attacking you or any other user on this forum.

I cannot apologize for something I didn't do!

I am actually sorry for trying to help! And I will take you advice and not contact or respond to your posts after this, since my posts seem to irritate you or something, I am not going to even to try and understand how and why.

Again SORRY FOR TRYING TO HELP!

    End of discussion!

About that politics issue. AND PEOPLE PLEASE DON'T START IT AGAIN BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF PLACE!!!!!

I cannot move or delete that thread or lock it because I am not a moderator in this forum nor do I have adminastrator rights anywhere on this site other than in the forums I help moderate (I am just a user like anyone else outside the forum I help moderate). All I did was just advise people to stop responding and forget about the thread. That's all I can do.

As for now all I said to you was: "heart I think that what you are refering to is text size in IE. right?"
Note that I asked if I understood your point!

I was just trying to help in the communication process between you and gtd2000 because I thought you were misunderstanding what each was talking about. THAT'S IT!

While you responded with: "Please leave me alone. Please do not help me!" ... "Please, Do not contact me again unless you apologize...". How was I supposed to understand that?

Last I have a question for you: I seem to have not understood from you that you were talking about a full zoom feature in IE, and not just text resize. You say it is some sort of hidden unknown feature that a friend of yours wrote about in a magazine. I would like to hear more about that feature and how you can access it. Because as far as I know quite a lot of people here have never heard of it.

Anyway I live by a moto that makes things easier to handle and live through: FORGIVE AND FORGET! and I have already done that [ :)] No grudges no hard feelings. We are all here just to help each others out!

it's quite alright, I do not take offence easily -- especially over the internet. I'm still quite curious how someone can be threatened in a web forum such as this one thou -- for one thing nobody has any of my personal info -- not even a correct email address... [ ;)] But anyway I digress...

So, lets leave the hysterics out, and keep it civil, shall we? Qwester was merely trying to clarify something:

    you wrote:
"Your the easiest so I'll start with you. The zoom feature is for the entire website page in IE..."

Which is incorrect. IE doesn't zoom for the entire website page, IE merely enlarges the FONT. Opera on the other hand, does a TRUE zoom -- it zooms the texts, the graphics, anything else. IMHO a very useful feature especially for my WUXGA screen. heh

Whether you care to know that is irrlevent, Qwester was merely correcting a factual mistake. Someone else might be misinformed.

    cheers,

Yass there is IP tracking. Even on this site. People with no static IPs will care less since their IP will change each time they log in. So tracking the IP will only lead to their internet provider. While people with fixed IPs (like me) have it differently. You could easily tell my street address from my IP. A lot of sites that are FULLY legal online can give you an address for an IP.

Security issues on the internet are controversial. I don't really know what is best.

Heart I am not sure if you have me mistaken with someone else, but here is what I said:
"I don't get it. If you guys are upset with this being posted in the first place why don't you just stop flaming and let it fade into the history!

I saw this when it was posted and since then everyone has just ben going on. Maybe we need a politics corner for venting. I have seen that on a lot of other tech forums and I find it to be a nice idea. Especially that we have here people from around the world and it would be a nice way for exchange of ideas!

So if this thread bugs you just ignore it!"

No indication on my part that I was enjoying it, or I know if the others are! I just suggested developing a corner for people who seem to have political issues to vent them there and leave the tech forums free of that none sense.

And this was on the Dell forum. If you check the main page I only help moderate the Hardware and Fujitsu forums ONLY. I repeat I am a regular user elsewhere, including the Dell forum, and anyone can see that for themselves from the main page, no need for me to state it.

Anyway if we are both clear on the issue, then I guess let's just forget it and move on. No hard feelings.

Sorry if I annoyed you through any direct or indirect way, but as you can see nothing was intentional on my behalf.

    flyrooster,

Great site, information ,etc...! Thanks ! I want to read every single thing. It psyched me out and I loved it after only five minutes. I have "never" been to that site but as I was reading I remembered vaguely (think I mis spelled the word, sorry!) it mentioned on "TechTV". Do you watch ? I actually like it so much that I registered for their newsletter with one of my 25 or so different email boxes for junk, etc...

Thanks! Lots of info...is an understatement and the way I like it. I'm thrilled to death!

I used to watch Tech TV (Screen Savers), started way back when Kate and Leo were the hosts, but since they changed to G4 the show has just gone to hell, not worth watching anymore; it's a little "kiddies club" anymore. But that is where I first heard about SlimBrowser. Then they started pushing Firefox and never mentioned it again. Personally I think they had some kind of deal going with them.

I think anyone who likes Firefox would like SlimBrowser better, for all the same reasons. Doesn't hurt to try it!

Thanks I'm "only" interested in the browser. I don't care about the "Zoom" feature!

Ok , gtd2000 ! Look the IE "zoom " up on yout Emachine notebook. You seem to be obsessed and I personally have no interest in the zoom feature. You could have looked up the actual article if you had asked me politly. I would have given the link. Don't worry about it! Enough advise was given to the original poster to help and It's not a secret. I stated that the article said it was an IE feature that was a hidden option that most people were not aware of. I tried it following instructions and it worked . That's all I can tell you.

Nothing personal . Just stop because you wont get more information from me. If anyone thinks I'm wrong with this issue then it should have been asked for me to post the link to the article. Lets simply say I'm wrong! So I know something some people don't and I wouldn't use it!
