An interesting experiment regarding the grainy screens.

So I took some photos of my 1520 with the screen of the grainy screen comparison at different angles. The results were interesting. Try to to do yourself and see if you get the same results.

First at normal viewing angle(what the angle you'd normally view when looking at the laptop)

Looks pretty normal on both sides right.

    Now a lower angle.

    An even lower angle!

Notice the big difference being apparent.
Is this due to a crappy coating of the gloss or what? Why does the "grainyness" go away at extreme angles. Maybe it's just the earlier batches of the 1520 that have this problem or what? Speculate away!

To me it looks like the graininess is MORE noticeable at extreme angles.

This type of screen is just unacceptable to me. I went to best buy today to check out the Asus G1S to check its screen, but unfortunately they didn't have it on display. However, I did look at all of the other screens of the laptops they had on display, and NONE of them were even close to how crappy the Dell 1520 looks.

I was really impressed with the screen on the Sony VAIO VGN-FZ1. The clarity of that screen was AMAZING compared to the 1520 I received.

is this on the screen or whatever it is viewing? isn't it because of the lowe resolution? 1440x900?

It is the craptacular glossy coating that the dell screens have on them. It has nothing to do with the resolution.

No, I took these shots with my canon sd800.

It's noticeable on lower angles because the grainyness goes away.

If it was still grainy then you wouldn't notice a difference, that's probably why how some people can't tell the difference is because they had a grainy screen in the first place.

I need someone to do this on their 1520 and see if they can get the same results.

    thanks for doing this:
what resolution is your screen? and what type of screen is it?

also, could you perhaps get a screen of your desktop to show how big the icons are. I've been looking for a 1XXXx800 [don'r remember numbers] anti glare and was wondering if that resolution is ok.

It seems like where the most light is, the less grainy it is. the pics seem to fade in your extreme angles, making it seem kinda grainy where its darker. but your observation has some validity in it.

    thanks again

    I have the seikon epson SEC3350 with a WXSGA+ 1680x1050 screen.

There's no point in me taking a picture of my icons because I increased the DPI to 120 which increases the size of my icon/text. So if you're deciding on whether to get a higher resolution or not based on that. Don't. Because that can be easily modified. The biggest thing to consider is if you want to fit more stuff in your screen. Which I love :D
