I have had my Vostro 1500 for a little more than a week now. I am really very happy with it. My screen is a LG/Philips. It is bright, no graininess, and no leakage. My complaints are minor, and not really complaints, but rather things that are not perfect (for me):

Wobbly battery (but I don't shake my laptop)
I prefer the feel of the inspiron keyboard (but the Vostro's is not bad).
    Battery runs a little hot.
Impossible not to get fingerprints on the finish, and it shows every one of them.

    Vostro 1500, Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, 2.0GHz, 800Mhz FSB, 4M L2 Cache 1 $1,082.00
15.4 inch Wide Screen SXGA+ display with TrueLife LCD for Vostro 1500 1
    2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 DIMM 1
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 1
    120G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive 1
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium 1
    8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+R write capability, w/o Roxio Creator 1
Integrated High Definition Audio 2.0 1
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini card 1
    Integrated 2.0 mega pixel webcam 1500 1
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, for Vostro 1500 1
    Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR) 1

My Wife has an Alpine White Inspiron 1520. Basically the same specs, except a 8400M Graphics card, and a 7200RPM HD. Hers has a SEC (Samsung screen). Hers has the battery wobble, a little light leakage (which she does not notice), and a lid that does not close tightly. However, she is extremely happy with it.

Just wanted to let you all know that there are actually happy Vostro/Inspiron owners out there. Reading this board, you would never have thought so.

I'm super happy with mine, and I even have to have the motherboard replaced for the headphone noise, who cares?
I got an amazing laptop with top notch hardware for $1200 out the door.
Other than the headphone noise this thing rocks, no complaints here.
It knocks the socks off my old Asus S96J, that thing was a piece o' ____.

Most people here in the forum like the Alphine white but the problem is that ship longer compare to Jet Black covers.

Very happy with my vostro 1500, so far ;)

Picked it up as a Scratch and Dent through the Dell outlet and it looks brand new except for the red sticker on the underside. Great screen, no odd noises (haven't checked the headphone jack yet), everything seems perfect for $809. And since it was through the outlet, I ordered on the 2nd, they shipped it on the 4th (after Labor Day), UPS tried to deliver it on the 5th when I wasn't here, and recieved it today on the 6th.

My Vostro 1500 is great and I'm very happy with it. The screen, keyboard, everything about it is top notch. I sort of feel bad for those who have had problems with theirs, especially the screens. I guess I got lucky for once.

That's what I was going to say. I like others, came here looking for a solution to a problem, otherwise I'd have never looked for a Dell forum. My battery doesn't wobble, my screen isn't grainy, and I don't plan on using the earphones, but I didn't hear any earphone noise when I tried them out.

Yes I'm happy with my Inspiron 1520, the only thing I don't like is the headphone noise with my low impedance earbuds.

Now I saw that SEC was mentioned as Samsung. Why do people always say that, they are Seiko-Epson screens. First off Kubuntu lists it as a Seiko screen in display properties, and another person has contacted Samsung asking about the screen and they replied to him that the company doesn't make SEC. If anybody has proof to refute this feel free to provide it, I would really like to know if all my information is wrong.

There are posters to this forum who have actually opened their machines up and the "SEC" panels have Samsung stickers on them...

after caling back to them they said (samsung) a lot of our lcd's we do not build, some we do others we do not, we have some built for us.. he would not come out and say it but i repeatedly asked about seiko epson and he just kinda ignored the question... so cant be sure... but im sure samsung does actually manufacture lcd's but they also said they have some made for them, and if this is the case they will "rebadge" them however necc....i remember back in the day when i bought a samsung tv and it had a sony tube in it

I love my 1700. Aside from the overheating video card (that Dell replaced quickly) I have had no issues with it.

I like my Vostro. It doesn't blow me away, but for the price, it does what it's built to do well.

Oh wait... I almost forgot that I have a 1720 on order. It must have been too long since the order date. I'd be satisfied if I'm using it right now. But, I'm not.

I'm extremely please with my 1520. It came in 6 days, I got the new screen Dell
s been putting on their laptops which isn't SEC, or AUO, or LGPhilips. There is a cpu whine, but its hardly noticable. All in all, a great system for a little over a 1000.
