That shouldn't be an issue of the touchpad itself. What laptop are we talking about?

The alps driver for the E-series does, in fact, cause the vista busy animated cursor (the spinning circle) to freeze (I upgraded to it on my D630 so i could get additional scrolling features, etc)

I haven't found a fix so far but it hasn't bothered me.

Hmm. My mother's E6400 doesn't seem to have this issue. She's just running the standard pre-installed Vista Business with all the pre-installed drivers.

Workaround 1 – Fixing the Dell-supplied touchpad driver:

To correct the issues with the animated cursors:

    1. Click on Start, and in the Start Search field type “regedit.exe” and then hit Enter on your keyboard.
    2. If User Account Control prompts you for consent, click on Continue or provide the appropriate credentials.
    3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alps\Apoint.
    4. Locate the CursorChangeType DWORD entry, double click on it and change its value to 0.
    5. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Alps\Apoint.
    6. Locate the CursorChangeType DWORD entry, double click on it and change its value to 0.
    7. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Alps\Apoint_Default.
    8. Locate the CursorChangeType DWORD entry, double click on it and change its value to 0.

    Workaround 2 – Disable Apoint.exe

This will correct the issues with animated cursors, the left-control key, and will also disable the message that is displayed on the screen when you press Caps Lock. However, it will also disable your ability to scroll using the touchpad.

    1. Click on Start, and in the Start Search field type “regedit.exe” and then hit Enter on your keyboard.
    2. If User Account Control prompts you for consent, click on Continue or provide the appropriate credentials.
    3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
    4. Locate the entry with a value of “C:\Program Files\DellTPad\Apoint.exe” and delete it.
    5. Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
