I'm in the market for a new portable notebook and am really set on the XPS M1210. I'm eyeing a deal for one that has a 2.33 ghz Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs of ram, 160 gig 5400 rpm hard drive, Nvidia graphics card, webcam, XP Pro, 6 and 9 cell battery etc. all for $1700, is that a good deal?

Does anyone have any or can find pics of it comparing its size to other laptops or objects? I think just about every owner of it is really satisfied here no? I've played really only 2d games over the years and still will for a while but would like to know what games the Geforce 7400 can run comfortably.

I'm using a Compaq Presario V3019US right now, a 14.1" laptop but have also been spoiled by 10.6/11.1" ultraportables so the Dell will be pretty chunky but it also has a lot more performance as well.

I think I'll buy it now but just in case when Santa Rosa comes around, it'll most likely be updated right?

I hear that the QuickPlay software (at least what HP/Compaq calls it), on the Dell can even view Microsoft Powerpoint, Excel, Word files aside from DVD movies, music, photos, etc. Can it also view avi, mpeg, etc files by any chance? For those preloaded with Vista, I hear it has a newer version, how could I upgrade it on an XP M1210?

I think this is so far the only 12.1" notebook with such a videocard and practically the most feature rich and powerful one around?

Sorry for all the questions, thats a habit of mine.
If any of you owners can chime in and let me know about it your baby, I'm sure many of you absolutely love it and I hope I can be part of the club too. :D

Yes, that price seems good. However if the price difference between the T7600 and T7200 is more than USD 100~150, then dropping 2.33GHz processor to save some cash may be a wise decision (especially if you are on a tight budget). Complete Care warranty is another option worth considering.

I think you can find plenty of information about the performance of Go 7400 in the web. Here are two notebookreview forum threads that turned up with a quick search in the Gaming (Software and Graphics Cards) forum : Thread 1, Thread 2. If you do a bit of searching you'll find plenty of other threads, articles and benchmarks. Go 7400 is slightly slower than X1400.

I don’t understand what you mean. DELL will definitely release a Santa Rosa based 12.1. However they might not choose to reuse the M1210 design. Since it requires a new motherboard DELL may come up with a completely new model. Even if they continue to use M1210 design, a core 2 duo M1210 can not be upgraded to a Santa rosa platform.

MediaDirect is the DELL equivalent of HP’s QuickPlay. It support standard MPEG and WMV by default, but you can always install other codecs like DivX, XVid etc. to make it support more formats. It can run PowerPoint slideshows, not sure about Word or Excel, I haven’t tried. Latest MediaDirect version is 3.

Geforce Go 7400 is the fastest VGA option available in 12.1 or 13.3 notebooks. But M1210 is not the only ultra portable notebook with a Go 7400.

Is santa rosa a new socket or something? No reason 945 can't run 200 fsb...

OP> It's a good deal, I love my M1210. It's not clunky at all and is a pleasure to use. Wish mine had a T7600 :(

The official launch date for now is 9th May. But it might take some time for DELL and other manufacturers to come out with Santa Rosa (Centrino Pro) notebooks.

Yes, it is uses a new socket called Socket P instead of Socket M (which is used by current mobile Core 2 Duos), and supports 800MHz FSB that requires a new chipset named GM965 Express.

pm me with your email address and I will send you several pics of the M1210 I found on the net. Some are side by side comparissons with other laptops. It helped me greatly when I made the purchase decision. Laptop actually looks a lot smaller in real life then in the pics.

Officially, May, but there are rumours that Dell will release updated Latitude D630 and D830 laptops in late April -- a Swiss university even stated that they'll make it available for their students to buy then.

It will be weird if Dell were to update their business line before the XPS line, so, who knows. The Inspiron updates would probably come later though, especially if there's any supply volume problem from Intel.
