I'm trying to put something together here for Dell.

I would like everyone who owns a 15.4" WXGA+ to check in and post their LCD model and if they have Grain issue.

    Laptop: Dell Vostro 1500
    WXGA+ Model: AUO 2077
    Grainy LCD: YES

I'm positive that everyone will be AUO 2077 and everyone will have grainy screens.

I want to know if Every single person who has this panel has the grain issue.

If you did not get AUO panel for WXGA+, what did you get and how is it?

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 WXGA+ and the LCD is an AUO 2077. I *think* it is grainy (I seem to think it is more of a "shiny silk" effect - if that is what's meant by "grainy" - and is definately caused by the special "TrueLife" screen coating, which is used to improve colour vibrancy I believe), but text, images, colours etc seem clear and sharp to me, so that doesn't really bother me. What does bother me a bit is the seemingly very poor viewing angles (both vertical and horizontal) - it's difficult to see the whole screen at the same brightness - has anyone else noticed this?

Apart from that, I'm getting used to my screen (it's certainly sharp, easy to read and easy on my eyes).

EDIT: I just thought that I should add: I *love* the WXGA+ (1440 x 900) resolution - it seems perfect for a 15.4" widescreen laptop, not too small but allowing good screen "real estate", and the perfect balance between performance and screen space.

Also see this older thread for a discussion on the 15.4" WXGA+ AUO screens:

I just got my inspiron, and was very nervous about getting a grainy LCD. I knew that with the previous luck i had with dell, i was for sure to get one. BUT...to my surprise, when i got it, i got the infamous LG/Phillips screen, and gosh is it beautiful. By far one of the nicest screens i have seen so far. THERE IS HOPE!!

To those who replied with the WXGA+, thanks. I'm about 99.9% sure that all WXGA+ screens are AUO2077 and i'm also 99.9% sure that they are all grainy.

To those who replied that DON'T have WXGA+, I appreciate the replies.

The grainy or silky effect is NOT normal. Though it's a coating problem, most other true life screens like the XGA or SXGA don't have this problem, even though they got true life screens as well.

In my opinion we have two options.

    1) Return it and get another screen other than WXGA+.

    2) If you already got a grainy screen, just wait a couple months and I'm sure dell will switch Manufacturer and then get the replaced LCD screen. This is wishful thinking on my part because I really want them to switch the LCDs.

WXGA+ is the perfect resolution for the 15.4" laptop but it sucks that we gotta put up with these poor built screens.
From what I can see, the screens themselves (or the core of the screen), but it's the damn coating that's jacked up.

    AUO 2077, nice 'n grainy.

I called to return the unit, after already having an in-home replacement done (already had the grainy AUO, and they gave me another one). They offered me 200 bucks to keep the system. Now, I will indeed keep it, but will call again in a month or so to have it replaced. :)

My screen, an LG/Philips (LPLC500) WXGA (1280x800), with a dark background, looked like a lung x-ray. It had some serious backlight issues. Unacceptable.

Mine: Vostro 1500 - AUO2077 - Now I believe I can see what you mean by grainy, but it does not bother me I guess. If I haven't read any info about this problem, I wouldn't have noticed it.

A friend of mine: Vostro 1500 - AUO2077 - Same grain, a little bit better brightness of the screen, and a lot more light leaking at the bottom than mine.

    I'm happy with mine :)

sorry guys...i was in such a hurry earlier...

I have a 1520 with the wxga+ LG/Phillips screen. Like i said it is awesome and definitely comparable to my friends Sony FZ190. His may be a bit brighter, but for the amount he paid, he can have it! How does everyone check for backlight issues?? I know its on an all black screen but how do you manage that? Re-boot??

got mine today (UK) and it's an AUO 1440x900, it does look somewhat grainy but i'm trying to convince myself that it's not a problem, there's very little backlight bleed so that's good. I would have it replaced but I don't want to just get another AUO and risk getting one worse than my current one. The grian is very obvious when placed next to my dads xga one.

I just came across something, so far it looks like all xga+ are crap and wsxga+ has a chance at being LGs which are good. Not sure if i need that type resolution though. Although I know jack about laptops anyways... Aside from wanting my first(thats not a hand me down). :D

I wonder how better it is me searching for one on the outlet store. Maybe the refurbs are the fixed ones people turned in. I have one on hold but not sure if I the 8600GT handles WSXGA+ all that great. Concerned about trying to game and it being a upward fight.

i guess i should have done the outlet thing this time.. but i was not sure i could use the 325 off coupon that way.. not even sure if i could have used it or not.. i know if i could have i def would have found a stinking one with a lg screen on it...imo dell is staring to really suck imo why in earth after all the return they continue to get back would they even still be using auo and the sec screens... i just cant believe it ... most likely 75%+ of the ones in the outlet or refurbs are due to bad screens... and they charge extra for this crap...

I actually feel your frustration... I really hope dell doesn't screw this up. :(

It's a lot of questions and business models/practices I don't get where this dealing with sub-standard parts/dealings would be acceptable if you would like repeat customers and less returns. Hell, they could excuse some of the ****ing support staff if they had spent the money on all LGs. If money isn't the issue, time. If LG doesn't have the supply wait until they do. I've seen some of you guys on this forum deal with retardedly long ship times for a good laptop.

just checked my service tag for my 1520 wxga+ that is on its way to me, apparently i got an lg screen but have yet to see it in person yet, heres the service tag info on it:

LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 15.4WXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., TLF, LGP

anyone know the difference between having lpl and lgp screens being that both are lg? or are all wxga+ screens for lg the lgp ones and all wuxga+ ones lpl or something like that

congrads and great for you..... i mean this in no way towards you.. but why the hell do some people have all the stinking luck... i mean i am a good honest person and ive had to now go through soon #5 notebook to try to get a good screen on it and others get them on the first shot.. what pisses me off is that dell should give everyone the same screens... i think its total bs that some people get good ones and others get shafted and have to eventually move on cause they continue to get the bad screens.. i spoke with dell tech support today and they KNOW THEY HAVE THESE BAD SCREENS.. the guy said we know they are out there and we have had a ton come back.. i asked im why they continue to use these crap screens and all he could say was i cant answer that... i think its total bs that say 30-40% of people get a quality product while the rest of us (you know who you are) get shafted on this whole deal... i sound angry?? i am... this has been way to much work and way to much to deal with to get a stinking laptop.. yes i got a hell of a deal but i would not have cared if i got all these discounts or not at this point if all i got in the first place was a proper system.. id trade these discount for that in a second at this point.. really wish i knew someone with a 17" who wanted to swap em out.. lol..

    Hi,

    Just replaced my Vostro 1500.

Have got a WXGA+ AUO2077 and it looks like someone has smeared sand and vaseline on the screen.

Looks its worse when looking at white colours.

Has anyone rang Technical and got someone to come to their home to replace the screen even on a 1yr warranty??

I fancy arguing that the screen has arrived in an unacceptable condition and that I should not have to send it off to be repaired.

Sure they are, but it seems that EU models have definitely less grain or other technical issues. It seems that the QA in the Ireland factory is somewhat better.
