I currently use a Dell Inspiron 9100. This problem only started after I reloaded the system (but not right after) last Febuary.

Basically, when the computer is on, I shut the lid. It appears to go to sleep like always. But now, it will "wake up" with the lid closed and if I leave it closed, it will go back to sleep after about 5 minutes or so sometimes, other times, it will just stay on.

If I open the lid when it does this, I either get the password screen (as if I had opened it and it woke up) or sometimes it is stuck on a screen saying that its about to go into stand by mode, but it just sticks there as if frozen. Mind you, it already went to standby mode when I shut the lid.

If I leave it shut, it will do this over and over again (except for the times it just stays on.

Ive checked all settings and I have no idea what would cause this. Sometimes it seems to "wake up" if I move it while its asleep, but it also just does it by itself when its not bothered at all.

    any suggestions would be great!!!
    thanks.

you have to turn off wake-on-lan, particularly if you are connected to the internet. to do this, go to the device manager (click start>right click my computer>manage), right click your network adapter (intel or broadcom) and click on properties. go to power management and uncheck "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby".

    hope this helps. :)

you just need to change the settings ...they could have been reset by some update

change it so it does nothing when you close the lid.

Try upgrading the BIOS and the video drivers. most sleep and standby issues have been resolved by updating these drivers. download the drivers from the Dell website.

what settings (to mordeth)? I have looked for any settings that affect it and cant find it regarding closing the lid. I want it to go to sleep when I close the lid (and not wake back up). But I wouldnt even know how to keep it on when closing the lid.

I will perhaps try the drivers when I have time. Seems wierd though.

    thanks
