I heard the only problem screens are the WXGA+ models. I have not heard complaints about the WXGA or WSXGA+ screens.

actually wsxga has the graininess as well. It's WXGA that doesn't...along with all the matte screens.

    WXGA is 1280x800
    WXGA+ is 1440x900
    WSXGA+ is 1680x1050

    WXGA (1280x800)
WXGA+ (1440x900) This is the resolution that seems to cause the problem with the 1520
    WSXGA+ (1680x1050)

ummm... dont buy it then? Go with the Sager, or the IFL compal, Or if you were planning on going with the 8400, Go with the Sony FZ or one of the new Asus machines.

Can you visit a nearby Dell kiosk?

EDIT: See one in person and if you do not like, do not buy it.

The 1680x1050 screens ARE frequently being reported as grainy, in addition to the 1440x900 screens. You have the best chances of having a non-grainy screen with the 1280x800 matte screen.

What do you think of your 1520's screen? Did you get WXGA resolution?

    EDIT:
    Have you tried HP?

The 15" HP's don't have the 1440x900 screens and they have the 8400 video card

Mine is 1680x1050 and it is quite noticeably grainy, especially when compared to a crisp, clean display on another laptop.

What about a Dell Latitude D830 or Thinkpad T61? Unfortunately they do not offer much of a video card.

I am surprised Dell released such problematic monitors. I thought they learned their lesson after the problems with grainy D620 monitors. Dell did fix the problem with the D630. I am curious why they created a new problem after fixing one.
