Hello, I am trying to repair the DC jack on an inspiron 600m. All was going well until I got down to the last plastic portion surrounding the motherboard. I cannot figure out how to remove the motherboard itself from this internal skeleton of plastic, there are no visible screws attaching them, but at the points where it seems most secure, there seem to be permanent posts holding them together. Does anyone know how to remove this so that the terminals for the DC Jack can be easily reached? Thanks for your help.

I assume you've taken out the system board assembly as per the service manual:

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins600m/en/sm/sysboard.htm#1000473

Once you get that out, you basically need to strip all of the screwed down components off the board - the HDD caddy, PCMCIA bridge, processor and chipset heatsinks, etc.

Once you've got those peripherals off, there's one conventional screw near the end of the chipset heatsink that you'll need to undo and the six hexes around the serial, VGA, and parallel ports. Then you kinda lift the front of the board up and just kinda wiggle it out.

    Hi Denver,

If you check notebookpowerjacks dot com you will find the exact jack you need for your 600m as well as links to the 600m service manual.

Also, there is a nice pinout page of the 9-pin Dell Power jack that illustrates exactly what each pin does on that jack. If you run into problems, feel free to email me at rob@sfpcservice dot com. Good luck with the repair!
