So my laptops 2.5 years old and Dell have agreed to replace my inspiron 1520 with a new laptop as they've replaced nearly all the components in it and it still sucks. It sounds like an electric drill now as well. You can hear the laptop from the other side of my house!!!

    So here's the specs:

    Here's my current laptop:

    INSPIRON 1520

    INSPIRON 1520 CORE 2 DUO T7250 2.00GHZ
    15.4" WIDESCREEN WXGA+ (1440X900) TFT
    MIDNIGHT BLUE COLOUR WITHMICROSATIN FINISH
    MEMORY DUAL-CHANNEL 2048MB(2X1024) 667MHz
160GB (5,400 RPM) SATA HARD DRIVE
NVIDIA? GEFORCE GO 8600M GT WITH 256MB

    Replacement laptop offered

INSPIRON 1564 ( is that?? Is that Inspiron 15R??)

    Intel i3-350M (2.26MHz) Mobile CPU
    15.6" High Definition (1366 * 768 ) WLED
LCD Back Cover : Ice Blue
    Memory: 2048MB (2*1024) 1067MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
    Hard Drive : 250GB Serial ATA (5400RPM)
Graphics : 512 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330

    So obvious things:

Improvement in processor, not sure how much improvement though.
Downgrade in graphics card. Won't be able to do any gaming on a 4330.
Downgrade in monitor pixels, have no clue about the other stats for the screen. WLED, TFT?
Slight improvement in memory and hard drive.
ICE BLUE!!! I paid for my midnight blue microsatin finish!

Overall i would say a rubbish 1st attempt by Dell :p

What do people think? What specs are reasonable to ask for? I'll definitely be after a much better graphics card.

The 1564 is only available with one type of screen/graphics card. I don't think you can adjust those options. They can only give you what's available.

Some improvement, although the improvement would be easier to notice with an i5.

An NVIDIA of that vintage was a disaster waiting to happen. These days, a 512MB graphics card is unremarkable, perhaps more trouble than it's worth considering how capable Intel integrated graphics have become.

Sorry. It seems that 16:10 ratio screens are about extinct in 15 inch notebooks. You can't even get 16:10 ratio screen in a highend business laptop. Dell can't give you what they don't make.

Yes and no. While you have quicker RAM, you also have to keep in mind that 2GB is pretty much the bare minimum with 64-bit Windows 7. For a 32-bit Vista system, 2GB of RAM was fairly decent but I have misgivings about so little memory these days.

As a replacement for a 2.5 year old notebook? How much better do you expect? At least it doesn't have a NVIDIA card, and as we all know, NVIDIA caused a lot of notebook failures in the last couple of years.

Exactly what I was thinking. You, sir, are one lucky chap.

The i3 350M has approximately twice the performance of the T7250 using linear benchmarks.

Also, I suspect they won't upgrade you into Windows 7, you might be left with whatever operating system you were previously running...

Perhaps you could ask for a cash coupon instead (equal to the Inspiron 15R), and buy a Studio 15?
