About to order a 1405, wondering which screen to get.
Have they fixed the bleed on the TrueLife ones yet, or is it still pretty random?

I am about to order a E1405 also, but without the TrueLife screen. How the the screens currently on the ones that are just arriving to people

Yeah, my old Inspiron 8000 has a matte screen and I love it, but I do like movies. But the main reason for the purchase is for documents and Word, so I assume matte will be better for that.
Just don't want bleed, that drives me nuts sometimes if it's really bad. The I8000 had 0 bleed. Love that screen -
l ordered mine a week ago and UPS should be dropping it off within an hour, l'll tell you then if the screens good
l also ordered the 14" WXGA+ Trulife. -
Awesome, thanks!
I am leaning towards the matte screen, but if the TL is good... -
i have the truelife on my e1405 and its just fine fo rme...it does have some leakage, but its not that bad....only on black screens....if i could get it replaced for free...i guess i would...but its so minimal its almost not worth the headache.
I use mine for word, internete, work and mainly school....so its all good. -
l just got my E1405 and theres about a inch of light coming up across the entire bottom, but only really noticeable when on a black or other dark screen.
-
I wonder if anyone who has the matte screen could comment. is it the TrueLife that causes the leakage? Would matte finish help this?
I think I am going to go matte anyways since the reflections would bother me a lot in a car or outside. While laptops are not the best outside anyways... -
From what i've read, the issue with the backlight is that they are only putting one backlight in at the bottom and none at the top at all which would be the cause for the bleeding.
-
I'm worried I'd see it during widescreen movies (letterbox). Which I watch a lot of...
-
I'll let you know how mine is when I open it tomorrow morning.
-
l'm assuming your getting windows MCE, in which case while its playing you can choose to stretch the video across the entire screen. The quality is still good but theres no black bars to show off the leakage. l just watched a dvd on mine stretched and l didn't notice the light leakage at all. -

distort the image? blasphemy!
-
Guess I'd just have to hope for a low/no bleed one and complain if it does...
Do 1505 have these issues? -
-
OK, first off I noticed that the light leakage is more noticeable from a top angle, that is looking down at the screen from a higher vantage point. Straight on I can barely notice it, except for a faint glimmer if I focus on that area...and that I probably wouldn't have noticed unless I read what I've read here
That said, it isn't dark in the room--it is 2:30 pm here--so I don't know how much worse it might be in a dark room.
One way to look at it is rank yourself on a scale of 0-5 in terms of computer savvy:
0 Don't know where or what the power button is (your grandparents, the Amish, etc).
1 Can get on the internet is about all (probably your parents, maybe your girlfriend).
2 Basic computer abilities: word processing, internet, customization, etc (me and most under-40 non-tech types).
3 Moderate computer abilities: serious home user or low-grade professional (most people on this forum).
4 Advanced computer abilities: Expert home user or professional programmer (the really knowledgeable folks on this forum).
5 Computer savant: near total mastery of computers (Bill Gates, or one of those super tech guys in movies that every special agent or vigilante knows).
If you are a 2 or below you'll have no problem. If you are a 3 or above it might bother you. -
I recently ordered and received (2) of the 1405's and was not impressed with the screen. 1/3 of the bottom screen suffered light leakage problems and off axis viewing displayed black crush. After spending over an hour on the phone with dell tech support, they decided it was a hardware defect and authorized their return for refund. Just warning you.
About to order a 1405...screens fixed?
