Alright, so if I get some positive feedback on this setup for my college laptop, I'm gonna be buying it tonight online. Had to make some cuts in OS/screen, but I'm not too bothered by them, got the price to something my parents and I can afford. Bascially, I'm looking to see if it is a solid build for the price and if it is relatively future proofed enough to last me 4 years with minimal upgrading.

Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ Display
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (buying dells, because after all sales, it comes out to be 40 bucks more than Newegg's, and for 40 bucks I'd like to have the ram covered with the warrantee)
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS
Hard Drive 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem

that all looks good, actually the same system i have except for i have a 1505 but i would definately go for the larger baterry, i have my system underclocked and the 9 cell and i get around 4 hours battery life so if you had a larger laptop at regular speed with the 6 cell you would be lucky to pull off more than 2 hours, just a suggestion, not really sure what you are using it for but other than that it is a great system. if you do want to underclock it while on battery power download notebook hardware control, just google it and you will find a site to download, it lets you run at full speed when its plugged in or throttle back and forth as necessary to keep the heat down but still have the power. any questions feel free to pm me, hope this helps

Thanks, that helps a lot, I'll be adding on the 9-cell battery now and making the purchase.

If you didn't purchase already, I would suggest lowering the amount of RAM to the bare min. and buy it aftermarket through Newegg - it'll save you some money.

Personally, i say buying it now would be a little stupid because they jacked up the duo core prices by a lot today. Yesterday upgrade from 1.83 to 2.0 was a little over a 100, now its 280 due to backorder. So even if you buy now, it will probably take a while until you get it. That's just my 2 cents.

I don't know how much the battery is, but if you get the six cell for the default price, you can buy a battery from bal'thzar for 65 bucks. So you have two batteries. I think the upgrade price is more than that....and you will only end up w/ one battery.

the question is not how much of a difference in price between the cpu upgrades before and after change in $.

the REAL TEST is to take the TOTAL COST of identical machines before and after the change in cost of a cpu upgrade.

i'll bet the difference is pretty small.

The price seems too high. Are you taking advantage of any 40% off or $750 off coupons?

Yeah, used a 30% off coupon, 12% EPP Discount, and got a $150 rebate for ordering the 4-year Warrantee with Accident insurance.

Just so you know, almost ALL RAM manufacturers cover their RAM sticks 100% lifetime. Save some money and get a stick of Kingston through Newegg.

Unless you need your laptop very soon, I'd wait. In the last several days alone prices have gone up pretty much across the board :(. What I could have gotten for $1280 on Monday, I can get for about $1550 now. I dunno what's up, but I for one am waiting a bit longer.....
