I keep my computer on hibernation mode when not in use, and today when I came and turned it on I noticed my anti virus (AVG) said that it has been running system scan for over 20 hours today....

I dont know if i am being paranoid but the hardrive is being thrashed even on idle right now (thats normal with vista right?), and i dont know if it did before but it seems like as the hardrive is being read its making sounds.... its nothing grotesquely loud or mechanical but I can hear sounds.

Is the hardrive (320gb samsung 5400rpm) supposed to make sounds during access? Can an antivirus program really run even when the computer is in hibernation mode?

No, the laptop is completely powered off. It probably says it's been running for 20 hours because it was following the system clock, which keeps going even when not on so that when you used your laptop again it says that it's been going for that long.

Hard drive noises really depend on the specific hard drive. I know some seagate drives that are notorious for being noisy, while others are not...I hope that someone with the same drive as you have would be able to comment better as to whether those noises are normal or not.
