Hi - Another Screen posting I am afraid!

I am on my second Vostro 1500 now. I returned my first one due to slight grain but more so just to get a better spec to be honest.

I ordered the standard 1200x800 screen but Dell have sent me the WXGA+ screen which I thought was a bonus as I had not been charged for it but when it arrived this morning I noticed the grain straightaway.

It is the AUO2077 and it looks like it has been coated with a bit of a sand and vaseline combo!!

If I contact Tech, would they replace the screen? I want to argue that it is sub-standard and want someone to replace it with another screen at my home.

I only have the 1yr collect and return but I will argue that it has been shipped as unsatisfactory and I do not want to be without the laptop for a week or so.

If they agree what are the chances of specifying an LG screen?

    Thanks in advance

Sorry to here that. The 1500 with the wxga + combo is probably the worst thing you could have done. That combo has seen the most screen complaints and frustration by a long shot. I suggest replacing with the regular wxga or matte and have them drop the price instead. The odds in getting a good LG screen with the higher resolution is less then getting another dud. Dell should do themselves a big favor and just drop the wxga + option on 1400 and 1500. Or they could just quit using the crappy sec's and AUO's and keep the LG's. I don't thing the wxga + is much of a problem on the 1700. Even HP uses that resolution on their 9500 which tells me the glass makers don't have much issue with that res with the 17" screens.

There is no matte wxga + option. In the review section their was huge review done on a 1420 with a wxga matte http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3835. It looked good in the pictures.. I think the viewing angles will be much better too. The problem with the wxga + TL is that both the SEC and AUO pretty much crap.. The SEC is dark, and bad.. really bad viewing angles. The AUO is just grainy/vasoline/screen door effect whatever you call it crap. Wxga+ and the 14" is not a good idea. People need to start understanding that resolution is a problem with many glass makers. People do say they have good wxga + screens but be prepared to wait on multiple replacements to get one.. if ever.

Let me add, that you would probably be safe in getting a regular wxga TL too.. that would probably give you richer colors/contrast. Even AUO makes decent wxga screens. Its just the wxga + screens that have issues with both the 14" and 15".. But I don't think they are bad on the 17" for the most part.

how about the LG? I just heard the LG WXGA+ can be as bad.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=170487

For WXGA, do you recommend TrueLife over Matted? Which vendor is best?

    thanks

For the most part, the wxga displays will not have as much grainy issues. You probably won't be unhappy with what dells sends.. but don't hold me to that. It really does not matter anyway since there is no way you can specify which panel you want dell to use.. its simple luck of the draw. I am using a wxga glossy 15" LG on my new HP dv6500t and its brilliant.. amazing screen (HP does not offer matte on dv6500t). If you really want guarantees of getting a good display then go with HP. HP generally has amazing displays as a whole. I was just at circuit city and looked at a bunch of HP's and they all looked good. I don' expect as much from dell.. they don't seem to put as much priority on screen quality as HP or Sony.

The golden rule here is just avoid wxga + with dell (except with 17" screens). The wxga matte or TL should be ok.. The TL will give richer colors with movies etc.. the matte better for viewing text and less reflection. Matte probably gives you better viewing angles as well. But both would be vastly better then the crap wxga + screens that dell is dishing out these days.

Agreed. Generally speaking, I don't think the inpirons build quality has improved from their past models. I am convinced that their manufacturing processes are out of control and they choose to go with the cheapest components available for their internals. I recommend the HP for the their brillant screens and superior built in altec lansing speakers which I am really enjoying now. The dell I had is like comparing a Ford ranger to a Toyota Tacoma. My out of the box wow factor with the HP has been great. Maybe I just got a good one.. but based on my experience I think HP is really on top of their game with the award winning design on their dv2500, dv6500 and dv9500. The GPU is their only Con.. which is a deal breaker for many. But if the 8400 is enough, then HP is a nice alternative to dell. The HP 9500 does offer the 8600 gs.. but not the gt like dell.

I don't know.. I have heard people having good AUO and LG as well. I can't honestly answer that question since I have not had one from Dell. But for sure people say much better things about dells wxga matte or TL on this forum. All I can say is the LG on my HP dv6500t is perfect. Maybe somebody else here can answer that question. But from the reads, about the only way you can specify a certain piece of glass is with home service when they come out and replace the panel at your home..
    Good luck.

I spoke to Tech in the end and to be fair they were very sympathetic.

They have arranged for an engineer to come out tomorrow and replace my screen with a WSXGA+ Truelife free of charge. They will be contacting me tomorrow to ensure I am happy with it.

Hopefully this will be OK, considering it is there best screen price wise. I presume I can run this screen with a 1440x900 res???

You might. But it probably would look worse. Generally LCD's look best at their native resolutions. The wuxga LCD's on the 1720's get some good reviews on here.. People say they look great and have excellent viewing angles. Not sure about that res on the 15. You may have been better off dropping down the res instead of going higher.. especially if you are thinking of running a lower res then what the native resolution is.

i think this is an overstatement..there's way more complaints about the wxga+ rather than the sxga+, however neither is 100 % guaranteed..

okay i should have phrased that better... what i meant was what he said above there are no gaurantees... but on this forum at least we have seem the worst/most amount of issues from the wxga+ then the wsxga then the regular xga... imo the best case i would say to be the safest would be the regular xga... i odn think anything is an overstatement though when it comes to how bad dell's screens have been of late i know personally i have had 2 bad wsxga's so far and the one that i have coming if there is a problem will be my last

I tried getting Dell to downgrade me from WXGA+ to WXGA but they wouldn't do it. As long as this next Samsung screen isn't grainy I'll be happy, I'm done worrying about colors not looking right.
