after narrowing it down to only the glossy 1440X900's, some are now speculating that it is the 1520's that are hit the hardest by graininess, with 1420 having relatively fewer problems.

if you own one of these two screens, please please please contribute to the poll to help out prospective buyers as we attempt to narrow down which is the most problematic screen.

i also wonder, are these anecdotes about dell coming to your home free of charge and replacing the LCD reliable? if this is true, i dont think people should cancel but rather just get the replacement. i dont think enough people have had this done though to conduct a study via poll.

It's incredibly simple to replace the screen yourself.

BTW my roommate got into this whole thing last year with his E1405. They sent him a new panel, but couldn't guarantee him it would be the "non-grainy" version. On the third panel, he lucked out and got the different one.

i think the moderator should put up a single thread for all the screen problems.

there are already like few hundreds.

too much BS to dig through. and those threads were inthe early stages when we had no idea which models were effected. its been narrowed down and we're trying to narrow down even more.

so please get off your high horse.

    so far, 7 respondents.

both people with the 1520 have graininess.
2 people with the 1420 have it and 3 dont.

looking good for 1420 purchasers, not enough data yet for 1520 to say. if you ordered a 1420, at the very least, you can be optimistic that there are mixed results.

as far as 1520, it seems ALL on 1440X900 have problems based on posts ive read, but not enough votes to conclude

It's not just the 1440x900--my screen is 1680x1050 and it is one of the more affected ones. I think you're more likely to see a correlation between build date and screen quality, once you throw out the matte screens.

hmm, interesting. by screen quality do you mean its completely arbitrary as to which type of screen they put in each machine? how enifficient...

as far as build date, the new inspirons have been out for 2 months now, correct? i guess the ones all built in june have more issues...?

That's how I expect it to be. Each shipment will have successively less issues than the previous one as they work out the kinks. Mine has both common issues--yucky screen and headphone interference--and mine was in the first shipment.

By screen quality I mean crispness/clarity versus graininess.

stella - if the latest shipments dont have the problem, i would suspect that this can be easily rectified by a screen replacement?

*Shrug* Possibly. I was going to settle for a screen replacement until someone mentioned the headphone jack interference. It's noticeable on my machine to the point that I wouldn't be able to do something with intermittent sound like gaming without it driving me crazy (it sounds like staticy morse code). I thought about doing an entire system replacement since I do feel like the headphone noise will be fixed too, but then I would be out of time to return it and I don't want to be stuck with the 1520 with the POSSIBILITY that the problems will be fixed.

To find the make of your monitor in Vista:

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager > Monitors > Generic PnP Monitor > Details > Hardware IDs

headphone interference is fixed easily. just download rmclock and select "run hlt command when OS is idle". it works like a charm.

My 1520 just shipped today. I got the 1680x 1080 on a whim and a suggestion.

Funny, it beat the estimated ship Date by almost 2 full weeks (estimated date of 8/8)

I guess I can pester dell and make their margins thinner by dragging in the onsite person until I get a good screen if it bothers me.

from the poll so far, basically all of the 1520 glossy owners have graininess (10 of 12). So beware.

    For the 1420, it's a grab bag. 5 out of 12.

I'm going to keep bumping this thread to get as many votes in as possible.

Well, these types of polls are not very effective, especially at this time, when all of the inspirons are considered new by their owners. Right now, the only people who go here, and are not playing around with their machines are people with problems seeking fixes. So it is natural that more people have the grainy issue in the poll. Why would someone with a perfectly good computer look at threads with problems? Anyway, to get some TRUE results, you have to wait until the people get bored with their new machines.

The thread title mentions nothing about graininess.

In fact it could make a non-grainy-screen owner click on it to find out what the "ATTENTION:" thing is all about ... by the time they find out what the thread's about, they are already in and can vote.

Actually, no. This forum is a pretty accurate representation of the population of Inspiron owners. Your argument is based on the unsubstantiated assumption that anyone experiencing the problem would come here thus affecting the numbers. In essence, by saying that people not having problems aren't coming here, you're saying that in turn, most people with the problem come here, and the people that are here with the problem are the only ones having the problem.

That's just not true. There are other forums and I would reckon the majority of the population would simply complain to Dell directly or just comply with the issue due to ignorance that it can be fixed, without coming to the forums.

So this is a pretty accurate microcosm of the population.
