all of the other threads seem to be a mumbo jumbo of confusion with statistics skewed as many people with the non glossy are voting.

from what i have read, it's the 1440X900 glossy 1420 screens which are grainy, not the 1280X800 non glossy. unfortunately, the former is the type i ordered and i am considering chaning my order based on the results of this poll.

IF YOU OWN THE 1420 AND GOT A GLOSSY 1440x900 SCREEN, ARE YOU EXPERIENCING THE GRAININIESS?

from what ive read, it seems people with the anti glare dont have the problem, but people with the glossy do.

I wish there was a 1440X900 anti-glare option. I simply cannot stand the size of 1280X800 - the huge icons are an eye sore. but if the screen is going to be grainy, what's the point?

Have you ever seen a 14" notebook with a 1440x900 resolution? you'll need a microscope to look at it, especially if you use a classic theme.

    Just get a 1280x800 screen.

Maybe a magnifying glass, but certainly not a microscope! Just kidding. I ordered the 1440 x 900 screen on a 1520, and I'm just about blind without my contacts. I hope it won't be too small, but I need the higher resolution for viewing/editing photos.

I see a bit of a sparkle of pink and blue on pure white backgrounds on my 1420 with truelife. I really didn't even know what "grainy" meant or how the adjective applied until I looked it up when I saw it discussed here. It doesn't bother me {shrug}. Apparently this sparkle is a common thread for discussion for many different brands of laptops including thinkpads/lenovo, macbooks, toshiba and some people see it, and others don't.

I don't think so. I think there may be some bad panels out there. The question is if any of the replacement panels that people are speaking about have helped.

Dell's 14" 1440x900 screens from the last gen were notoriously bad, and I was really hoping that they'd make an effort to use better components this time around with the new series, but it doesn't look like it. It's probably the same old story - they'll be 3 or 4 different brands of screens being used, and 1 or 2 will be pretty decent and the others will be crap. So keep your fingers crossed. I'm really glad I went with the Vostro, so I can return it for any reason for a full refund.
