hello everybody, I'm new to this site and I'm quite surprised at the vastness of 'online' knowledge and happy to have learnt so much from the other threads ! Thanks !
But, I couldnt find any info on the new ATI 5000 series notebook GPU's in the Indian context. So

The DELL Studio series now comes with the HD 5470, which according to tha GPU benchmark isn't good enough for gaming. (The studio 17 here still carries the 4670, but, the better 5650 in UK) .

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

    A studio
    15 core i5-540M(2.53Ghz,4 Thread,turbo boost to 3.06 GHz, 3MB cache),
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3,
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470,
    320GB 7200rpm,
    1080p LED Full-HD dispaly,
backlit keyboard & 1 year CCADP
costs INR 59,000 (excluding only delivery)
Should I go for it or wait for them to upgrade the studio 17 to the better 5650 graphics ? (portability isn't an issue for me so the 17 is fine too ). IMO the price is too high. But I would like to know the opinion of you folk ! Are there any better alternatives(I doubt !) ? please advice !

    Thanks in advance!

    i had my 1557 for INR 61k.
in ur case the ram can only work at 1066MHz coz its an arrandale cpu with a fsb of 1066 MHz.
moreover core i5 540 is a dual core with 4 threads.
What i think is that the system u mention is way too overpriced...
    i got :
    core i7 720QM(quadcore with 8 threads)
    4 GB DDR3@1333,
512 MB HD 4570(not much price and performance difference compared to 5470)
    500 GB 7200rpm
    Full HD WLED(1080p)
    Backlit keyboard
intel wifi 5300 ultimate N or AGN whatever u call it
    Creative sound Blaster
    Bluetooth 2.1
    1 yr accidental damage protection.
and all usual stuff at only 61k including tax and delivery.
I think the i7 is much much more than enough to justify the difference of 2k in the prices. Moreover i've 500gb 7200rpm.
So my advice will be to find a better deal.Otherwise the system is fine for normal use and light gaming(u can play almost all games at 1280*780 in medium to high settings coz 1080p will not be playable in all games).

thanks a lot, that was exactly what I was looking for !
In jan this year they were offering the same laptop with the ATI mobility 4570 just for 53K. How can they put 7k for 5470 (would have been different if it was a 57xx series) ! Anyway i'd prefer the i5-540M as I really don't need 4 cores at present and I'll also have a lower TDP.
Guess I'll have to wait a bit for the prices to lower again.
Is the i7-720QM really good, should I change my mind ?

    i don't seem to have a problem with i7's.
if u wanna buy i7 then make sure u can keep it cool(laptop cooler or 9 cell) and ur sorrounding temps r also important.
as far as tdp is concerned i don't need very long battery hours.i get at least 3 hours, sometimes more with my 9 cell and most of the time the laptop works on ac line.

Both i7 and i5 r good cpu's but the i7 obviously has extra cores as well as ur ram will be working at 1333 and not 1066 as with i5.also i find i7 a lil bit more future proof even without the IGP.

so the decision is all upto u :
Long battery life vs more processing power(which u might not need in very near future)
Its just like what they say that "Power comes with some ill effects"

    don't tell me that u got 9 cell,intel 5300 or 6300 wifi,1 yr accidental damage,laptop back pack,sound blaster along with ur system...

well, where I live the temperature in summers easily peaks to 40C ( it was 45 last summer ) with 70-80% humidity. I think the i5 would then be better. It is now 33C at 71% humidity Thanks a lot.

WOW. too bad I can't order from UK ! they are selling these products at a very high premium in INDIA :-(.
Anyway how is the 5470, is it better than the 4570 ?. In the reviews even if the 5470 is ranked up the 4570, it seems the 4570 has higher frame rates in games !

I found it relatively expensive compared to the US :p.. who get it the cheapest. India surprisingly are being charged a premium, odd when you consider the call centres are in india etc.

The 5470 consumed slightly less power and emits slightly less heat (so ive heard). There's going to be a few members posting reviews in the Dell Studio 1558 thread in the forums in the next few days.. should have some coverage of the 5470 GPU too; everything up until now has been 4570.

Nada I didn't actually :p Don't like the extruding battery, dont need a great wifi card, I have house insurance which covers accidental damage, I have a bag which will fit the laptop already, I think the windows HD audio is sufficient + i prefer expensive and comfortable headphones (which I have) to deliver sound quality at its best. :D

Add to that there are no lemon laws in India and only "namesake" consumer courts and companies keep no stones unturned by preying on unsuspecting customers.

Considering the increase of bus width from 64 to 128 bits and increase in memory size from 512 to 1024 MB and also a new chip, the 5470 should perform better than the 4570.
Its a direct x11 card and 4570 was for Dx10.
But from what i've seen on a website 4570 gives better frame rates in some games.
but overall 5470 should be better than 4570.

That extruding battery keeps ur laptop cool and makes it running for longer time, that great wifi card provides better range and doesn't keeps droping connections evrytime,Ur house insurance won't be useful if u spill water on ur laptop or if it falls down from ur 2nd floor. Its Good u had the bag.and the Soundblaster thing(Even i call it dumbest) makes ur laptop speakers and subwoofer sound better so that i don't always have to use a headphone whose prolonged use(Doesn't matter how expensive they r) could make me deaf.
I hope u know that when we use headphones the bacteria in our ears grow 200 times faster :p

I hope I'm not disappointing you by informing you that the 5470 is still 64-bit and not 128-bit. If it really were '128 bit' with the 1GB DDR5 it would have had much higher frame rates than the 4570 and a really pretty GPU.
    check this out
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5470.23698.0.html

But it's good they included DX11 otherwise there would have been no point in bringing a new generation of 5xxx GPUs

My room is relatively cold (in England) and it'll be plugged in 80% of the time. Im never more than 5 meters from a WiFi spot (my uni has access points everywhere and my house is pretty well wired too), my house insurance will cover me if i put my laptop in the bathtub and fill it up, or spill something in it, or drop it, thats why its called insurance :p. Fair enough the subwoofer would sound great, I have 5.1 surround in my room which would probably sound better than the laptop speakers anyway, and anything in large quantities is bad, just dont listen to headphones so loudly ;)

Nice statistic with the bacteria, I use cotton earbuds from time to time, and I can always replace the filters and buds :D

Thats good.Visit my house sometime(any one of them) and u won't find more than 22 C in any Bedroom. But i think its my desktop that enjoys that temperature all the time and not my laptop coz i take it out with me and thats the reason i bought it(To be able to take it out with me).

Looks like u plan to spend ur whole life in that room and never go out.
If not the whole life then at least a few years is what u plan.isn't it ?.
Well for me...I am always out of my place just like now I'm sitting more than 1100Kms away frm my one home in Mumbai and abt 400 Kms away frm my other home in Noida, studying here in jaipur while earning money to build my familys third house and i hope the final one by myself and not my dad's money.
So dude, i really need that 9 cell and ofcourse i can't carry my 5.1's with me all the time.
also I do a lot of touring so i need to access many public networks with my wifi.
about the insurance i think insurance policies in our countries are a bit different.
and the most important of all :
Its the bacteria in your ears that grows 200 times faster and not the bacteria in the cotton buds that u use. :p
And its the prolonged use that causes deafness,Loudness only accelerates it.

I can't believe that they still held it to 64 bit.
anyway is dell offering this card with gddr5 or gddr3 ?
if its gddr3 then its almost same as 4570 just with a faster memory clock but if its gddr5 then it will for sure give much better performance thnks to vast increase in memory bandwidth.only 80 processing units r still dragging it back...

I spend most of my time in Central London actually... its what being at the 4th highest university in the world demands you see . And I can live without a computer, just because it's at home doesn't mean I'm confined to the four walls which form my room. I have a netbook to use when I commute on the tube etc as its a lot easier to carry around a 10.1" netbook. Just want the 1558 so I can use it around the house and when demanding tasks require a decent CPU.

Good that you're earning money and studying. I make my money work for me, its more effective whilst studying and I can sustain better returns, or profits, or earnings.. whatever you want to call it. Good luck on that third house ;). I'm not a fan of property investments, it's an increasingly meaningless asset in a world dominated by fast movers and studio apartments. The excess cash (saved on the lack of a mortgage) can be injected into other things.

    Ciao.

I'm not working in any company or call centre days and night...I invest in stock market coz i don't think u always have to work hard to earn money. So in a way even i make my money work for me.
and also since the begining i wanted to build something of my own.a house of my own built with my money and not my fathers. And abt the excess cash...well dear its the excess cash only thats earning money for me.And i don't really care very much abt the engineering degree course that i'm doing(although i'm in top ranked students) coz i don't need labels to show how intelligent i'm.And if evrything goes well and as planned i will soon be opening a company of my own.that soon is abt 4-5 years from now.lol :D
I know its a bit crazy but thats what i'm

Well, I need labels. After all, if there’s anything I've learnt whilst living in London, it's not what you know, it’s who you know. Labels introduce you to people, it just simplifies the process a little… and if you know someone then you’re already half way there. It’s a power game… with power comes money and intelligence... or you can just settle for intelligence which comes with emotional gratification amongst other small and irrelevant things :radar:

Well i believe with intelligence u can earn money and with money comes power.Although I already have a lot of power...thnks to my frnds circle and my fathers rep.So i'm not much hungry for it.
    Thats why they say :
"You never give importance to the things u already have."
