Hi guys.... I heard sometime soon dell will begin making AMD computers, not just intel. I'm quite excited and wouldn't mind buying somthing like they were offering for $399 (Celeron) but instead buy somthing like this with an AMD Sempron, or if its not to much more an AMD Turon. I'm a big AMD Fan. If anyone knows or has heard anything about this please poast somthing. Thanks!

Dell sells AMD CPUs... but not systems. IMO it will be a while before they sell systems. I wouldnt hold your breath.

I live in the home of Dell: Austin. A couple of weeks ago I actually read a pretty good article in the austin statesman about this very subject. An interview was done with one of the marketing directors asking about when Dell would start placing AMD processors in there computers? Since AMD is also located in Austin, this would only make sense.

Well to make a long article short the powers to be at Dell clearly stated that they had no intentions of taking on AMD anytime soon. They basically said that they were doing so well selling Intel computers that there was really no reason to take on another.

I will see if I can find the article. It might be archived on the statesman website also.

I don't think this is going to happen any time soon, my money is on 2007 at the earliest.

Possibly this would happen in servers as the word on the street is that AMD servers can outdo Intel based servers, as far as laptops go Dell has little incentive and as far as you can see to the horizon with product releases there's nothing.

Well.. one reason dell might now want to buy AMD's atm is because intel is using bad marketing techniques. They say to many computer companies if you just by intel we will give you CPU's for this price. But if you buy both AMD's and Intels they will make the price per intel CPU higher. This is what the whole lawsuit AMD vs Intel is about (To my understanding.. Correct me if im wrong.) The bad thing about this for AMD buyers is that when you buy a laptop from HP or some computer company that sells AMD's and HP's your actually paying more then you would if intel didn't raise its prices for the companies that buy intel and amd. So it hurts AMD, and makes them suffer for what intel is doing. =(

Another reason Dell doesn't take up AMD is because AMD doesn't have the manufacturing capacity to supply Dell with all the processors they would need. But, I think that is overexaggerated...if they only came out with two or three models, then they would be A-OK.

    Cheers,

I just heard this on CNBC last week on marketcall.
From what I understand, Dell only sells the chips but not in there computers.
The twist: Intel and Dell have a contract / marriage.
But Dell and Intel did not meet the earnings call last quarter, where else AMD made a huge profit and exceeded the earning, giving them a little more niche in the chip industry.
With lower prices on computers each season, it is harder for Dell to stay in that marriage with Intel and make profits.

Even with higher prices then the competition, Dell did well because of their top notch customer service, but now that is eroding away as more and more customers are becoming disatisfied dealing with outsourced CS and still paying higer prices with no special care. If this trend(not meeting the market call) continues I can see Dell selling AMD powered CPU's by end of the year 2006. AMD will meet and exceed the market call again(from early forcast) as where Dell and Intel will have trouble making the call.

But the world hasn't seen Intel's 65nm or 40nm chips yet...

Dell get cozy with AMD about the time the contract with Intel is up to extract more savings from Intel.

I really hope they take AMD up soon! I think It will be better for all of dells customers... After all most of the AMD CPU's are superior, at least in the desktop and server world....
