I cannot install the AHCI driver after many attempts. I've extracted the files from the Intel site and the Dell site and tried using them during my Vista x64 install and the install continues to say that it cannot install unsigned x64 drivers. I am stumped.

You need to download the 64bit version of those drivers

You cannot install digitally unsigned drivers on Vista64, its part of the security measures 64bit has.

think i've got that same problem, and that was with the signed drivers directly from Intel's site selected as Vista x64 extracted straight on my flash drive

the alternate way is to install vista as ATA and install AHCI drivers on next boot and change back to AHCI... that worked for me

I've installed with AHCI activated in BIOS and I did not get any BSOD. Installed fine. Those instructions seem to be for those who get BSODs. But the question is if I have AHCI. According to Intel's readme their file is "iaStor.sys" under driver details under Intel(R) SATA AHCI Controller and DE ATA/ATAPI controllers in device manager. I've got atapi.sys as the file.
