I am looking into installing Vista Ultimate x64 and was wondering if there is anyone here that has upgraded to vista 64 bit and what they did as far as drivers go. Mainly I am just trying to get all of the drivers ill need found before doing anything.

What I've done is boot off the DVD, put in the key and hit enter.

It worked fine for me on Vostro 1700. The only driver that wasn't recognised was the Intel wifi and Vista pointed me in the right direction.

I've heard tons of problems people have with Vista installs and I didn't have any, it just worked out of the box. The only difference might be that I was installing Vista SP1, so maybe Microsoft finally included all the required drivers.

So did vista find all of the driver you need automatically or did you use 32-bit drivers?

Hello, I currently have Windows XP on my vostro 1500. I am planning on upgrading to Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I was reading the link for clean install on a M1330 that is posted on here somewhere and he talks about installing the AHCI drivers. Do I need to download the one on the Intel site for xp or vista 64 bit?

Just a guess, but I think you need the Vista 64 bit drivers, since you are installing Vista 64 bit. If you want more detailed help, you should check out the Dell board.

    *edit*
I see that you've already started a thread about Vista x64 in the Dell board. You need to keep that thread going instead of creating a new one here.

Vista 64 has its own native msAHCI driver, so it doesn't need any 3rd party drivers.

What Andy said, The AHCI drivers are in the Vista 64 bit, at least in the sp1 version. I loaded the Vista Ultimate 64 sp1 last week and it went pretty smooth. The only drivers I had to hunt down was the Video, modem, LAN and touchpad. The rest were on the original driver DVD that listed 32/64 bit......

Vista has AHCI drivers built in, but for some reason my hard drive seemed to not be using them properly... it appeared to be using ATA mode instead. So I downloaded Intel Matrix Storage Manager and it's better now. Performance is better as measured by HD Tune, and I no longer have indications from that program and device mgr that it's using ATA mode. However, YMMV. I suggest trying it with the built-in drivers, and test performance in HD Tune, and only installing Intel MSM if there appears to be an issue or performance bottleneck.
