Yesterday when I started my laptop instead of booting it went to the ssetup screen and said something ot the effect that the 65W adaptor doe not have correct voltage and if you want to continue press F1. It had some other things written on the screen but I cannot remember now. So I pressed F1 and booted and have no problemd since then.
When I shutdown my lap top I typically leave my adaptor plugged and so after this warning when I started my laptop my battery was at 90% instead of 100%. After the power on and re inserting my adaptor one time the battery was able to charge to 100% in about 30mins.
Anyone seen similar issue. I know some said it may have to do with the BIOS but I cannot imagine, btw, my BIOS is A00.

You have the wrong power adapter. Dell should have give you a 90W adapter since you have the 8400 GS. The graphics card uses/needs more power so thats why you need a 90W asapter.
Call up Dell and ask for a new adapter plus compensation. -
Are you sure about 90W Adaptor?
Can I find it anywhere at Dell to prove it? I know the spare is 90W but all the standard ones I have seen are 65W. -
With that said, just call them up. The will have you run a short test and then replace it. If it is supposed to come with the 90W, they will send one, no questions. -
Im not really sure but I think manzi is right, i think you should have the 90W instead of the 65W.
-
I tried to configure the Vostro1400 (with 8400) but I do not see anywhere what size the AC adaptor it will ship standard, it does not say. I do see option of buying spare for both 65W and 90W.
EDIT: I checked the bom of my laptop build and it lists 90W adaptor (XD757) on it. I will check when I get home to see if I really have the 90W one. If not then I have pretty simple case to get the 90W one. -
i have had this problem as well. only happens about 1 in 10 reboots. i'll check with dell to see if i have the right adapter, i suppose.
word. -
Listen the spare 60W will only run the damn laptop, and BARELY charge it, and even then if you get it to charge your laptop by 5% then your very lucky.
ONLY the 90W power adapter can fully charge it. Dell just sells the 65W adapter for people who never move their laptop and dont need the bigger 90W version.
When a company supplies you with wrong information, lies to you, ignores your emails etc then i feel that compenstation is something Dell should offer themselves rather than have the consumers spend extra time to try and get it. The reasons millions buy from Dell is because they are a big company yet if they cannot offer a decent level of customer service. Because of this compensation is the customers right, especially if they promised one thing, yet provided another.
I can understand that if you spill coffee on your laptop then you cannt ask for compensation, but dont u have a go at me when im in the right. -
-
Oh so its my fault the the OP has given me the wrong info? Well im sorry, i guess i wont offer an explanation the next time someone asks for one.
-
I agree Nizzy. I used to work for Dell and have worked long enough in the computer industry to know that somethings just happen with no explination. If you don't like it, get out of the indistry. If he had called Dell and gave him the run around, I can understand the point of asking for compinsation. But since he hasn't even called them, then why should he go for the throught immediatly. Kindness goes a long way. When I worked there and some person called in and said they wanted their PSU replace with compensation when it was the first time calling and all they had to argue was that it was the wrong one, I would laugh at them. Tell them, you can get a new one and that is it! Give someone a chance to right a wrong before you persicute them for it.
-
Fair enough, i but i still think Dell should have given the correct power adapter in the 1st place. Thats the reason why i would ask for compensation as who can the OP charge his laptop with the incorrect power adapter. It defeats the purpose of a laptop etc.

easy guys! i believe manzi is right. companies should compensate you if the company supplies you with wrong information, lies to you, ignores your emails etc but with this simple problem, a sorry is enough since it's not a big deal, IMHO.
-
that being said, i do agree with what you just said, and this is the policy dell follows. -
Well hopefully the OP can post if its 65w or 90w. I myslef am a student so for me, compensation from Dell is something I have to try to get otherwise Im short on money. So whenever Dell screws up a bit i always try to push for compensation.
-
WOW you leave for an hour and this thread takes a life of its own.
I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Although I think asking for compensation for a simple or first mistake is not right. I think Manzi you have been burnt by Dell a few times so that may be the reason you just want to screw them since they screwed you a few times in the past. I don't blame you for your attitude if you had bad experience with them multiple times.
Back to the topic, I will check my ac adapter, I never paid attention to it until this warning. I have been using T40 for over 3 years and never had any adapter issue like this so this is unusual. Just to confirm list of components for my laptop does show the 90W.
Btw, how do I collect the 100 buck if is 65W from Nizzy -
just because you are a student doesnt mean you have that "right" to ask for compensation. it's like a little boy asking for a lollipop from mom.
-
I also have this problem but with Inspiron 1520. It only happens a couple of times out of aprrox. 10 boots, but it still happens. The cord is properly seated and i do have the 90w adapter.
-
-
same thing on the 1720 here. I have the 90 watt and a spare. it does it on both every once in a while.
-
I did some research and to just muddy the waters found 2 possibilities floating around for this issue.
1. The power connector attached to the mother board can be faulty and may need replacement if it becomes chronic.
2. Something to do with BOIS, that sometimes fix it.
Again these are thoughts or experiences I read elsewhere about this issue on Dell laptop (6400).
I hope it was a one time deal for me. Please post if or when someone contacts Dell on what they say. -
Just an update I do have the 90W AC adapter but still gave the warning for 65W adapter.
-
yay i win

Yh i've been screwed over 4 times by Dell so i think i do have a right to claim conpensation from Dell by now.
-
so as I originally posted.... Call Dell and they will have you run a few tests and possibly start replacing something. you may want to make sure you have the latest BIOS before calling. Even if you do have the latest, try flashing it anyway... that way you can tell them you did that step already.
-
I have not seen the problem once it happened 2 days ago. If I see it again I will call. It could have been power cord not completely plugged into the wall socket
