You should be able to download or view the change logs when you access the new BIOS on the Dell support site. There most likely isn't any difference that you will notice in practice.

    Hi,

As per my knowledge, for the Inspiron 17R SE 7720 the latest BIOS available is A03 and the release date was 8/17/2012. The A08 version is still not released.

Please find the below mentioned link for the details on the available Drivers and BIOS versions for this system.

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

I hope this helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance.

    Thanks & Regards

    Hi,

I apologize for the previous post. The new BIOS version available for Inspiron 17R SE (7720) is A08. As it was not updated in the Web site correctly, I missed it. In the link that I mentioned in the previous post, the A08 version is listed under the ‘Previous versions’. This error has been escalated to the concern team and will get it updated in the web site shortly along with the fixes. I thank you DianaC, for bringing this error to our notice immediately.

    Thanks & Regards

Sorry we still don't know what this new A08 Bios does, shouldn't there be a changelog or descreption or something. Does it solve the gpu clocking issue ?

#i am about to change my mind about buying this laptop from dell tommorow.

No it doesn't fix the GPU clock issue..

As for me it gave an issue with detecting my crucial m4 SSD, now it takes like 5 secs to detect the SSD during BIOS startup, giving 5 secs longer boot time. Beside that, no differences noticed.

    Hi,

I have upgraded my 7720 to the latest WHQL Nvidia drivers, 306.23 and updated my BIOS to the A08 version.

After the upgrades I ran 3dMark 2011 and 3DMark Vantage at the default settings for 3 times in a row each to get consistent results.

Much to my surprise I noticed a tangible improvement regarding the 3DMark scores for both benchmarks.

Here are the result for 3 consecutive runs of 3DMark 2011

    3dMark 2011.jpg

and the 3 consecutive runs of 3DMark Vantage

I did run BF3 at 1920x1080, Ultra settings and the FPS were between 15-24 FPS. Lowering the graphic settings to High the FPS were between 20-24 FPS.

Subjectively i also feel that Photoshop became slightly faster but this is something purely subjective.

I also noticed that my 3DMark results were higher those posted in C_man's review.

It would be interesting if other 7720 owners who use the 360.23 drivers and upgraded the BIOS to A08 could run the same benchmarks to compare the results.

It may be crap.I'm no gamer but I'm amazed at the graphical performance boost I get after updating to A08 and 306.23.

Actually, I think it's the A08 306.23 combo that provides the boost.

Like I said, I'm very curious to see what are others are getting running the same benchmarks.

Is it OK to download new A08 BIOS from DELL USA , or should we wait until is available in my region (UK-Europe).

Are there any localised differences in Bios (i.e. slightly different model/specs).

    Thanks

I downloaded the Dell USA version and it seems to have improved my laptop performance. See above.

I don't think there will be a localized BIOS version.

Hopefully this A08 BIOS fixes the comatose status of my 17R SE - I have to pull the battery every morning after switching off the night before. The power button doesn't boot the laptop after being switched off for a few hours....
    Will post more tomorrow.

Still No Boost on the GPU stuck at 745 and I tried 306.23, then ran Mark Fur GPU test with GPUZ, I have also tired Nivida Inspector, Preformer, and MSI Afterburner. No luck, I ended up going back to the Dell Driver and I'm still stuck a 745.. Hey is anyone getting the Boost to work, if so how...
    Thanks.

I think you need to reflash your BIOS for it to work like its supposed to. I just quite screwing with it and im fine with the 745 default as mine can get to 82 C after an hour of BF3. Of course my memory still OC's like its supposed to giving me 96 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Though the core clock would probably have to be 1GHz to take advantage of all that memory bandwidth. Ill just wait for them to release a new bios but it might be awhile.

To correct this here's a work around:

    1- Power off your laptop
2- Once laptop is powered off, unplug the power cord and wait 1-2 sec.
3- Replug the power cord in again
    4- Start your laptop.

This is the only way to get the 835mhz... until you unplug your powercord (Repeat the 4 steps again) or if you overheat and CPU/GPU Throttles back to 745mhz... sucks, but easy to do.
