WUXGA has 500:1, WSXGA+ has 300:1

Higher contrast ratio is better (blacks are blacker, and whites are whiter)

Always treat the specs with caution until independently verified.
Notebookcheck measures display properties for its own reviews. There's one here for the D630 with 1440 x 900.

Accroding to the site reviews:
The WUXGA 17" for contrast ratio came out to 572:1
The XGA for 14.1 came out to ~225:1 (dell claimed 300:1)
The XGA for 15.4" D820 came out to 143:1 (which really sucks) -
not everybody is crazy about contrast, also dell uses cheap screens so you never really know
-
Would that explain why my 830 wxga screen looks so horribly washed out?

What are you talking about ?? Contrast dictates whether a screen looks "washed out" or not. -

I assume the blacks are not really black, but just a dark grey ? I had an opportunity to work on a WXGA screen on E1505.
It was HORRIBLE. Now I know why -
So what you're saying is I should return my D830 using the satisfaction guarantee and get a WSXGA, rather than having the screen repaired as a defect. It looking crappy isn't a defect?

But I suspect the reason why your screen sucks so much is that it's contrast ratio is exceptionally low.

The D820's WXGA screen's contrast ratio came out at 143:1, though dell claims it to be 300:1
143:1 is really pathetic.
WSXGA+ screen might be fine is the contrast ratio is what is actually claimed (300:1)
Ask on this forum how people find their WSXGA+ screens.
WUXGA should be the best, but there is the font size issue...
Regarding screen exchange, yeah I'm not sure the other WXGA screens will fare better... -

Contrast ratio: Do the numbers mean anything ?

Hi wearetheborg. Thanks for posting this question. I am trying to make this decision myself.
The WUXGA panel sounds good, but the DPI really is way too high. I am finding it a bit difficult to read my WSXGA+ screen, with Windows' DPI setting at 120.
On the other hand, apparently Vista is much better at handling high DPI displays. But I wonder, to what degree that will be true of the various applications I use? No doubt the bitmaps in my applications will be tiny (or blurry)?
The other big problem (for me), is what if you want to connect an external display with a normal DPI? You must use the same DPI setting for both. The only solution for that scenario would be to change to a lower resolution on the internal panel. I wonder what resolutions it supports and how fuzzy they are?
On a side note. I follow your 'ron paul' vs. Fox news link. If that is accurately presented, then they really did smear him. But that is FOX news we are talking about so not much of a surprise.
A reason to choose WUXGA in 15.4" latitude : contrast ratio
