After much deliberation I believe I have finally settled on the D630 over competing offerings from Lenovo and HP. Before committing to a purchase, however, I still have a few questions about the system:
    • All the review units I have found have used 5400 RPM drives from Hitachi. I am considering the 120 GB, 7200 RPM drive. Does anyone know the model of this drive?
    • I have heard several complaints of poor contrast and color reproduction from the D630's LCD, including at least one case of poor focus requiring screen replacement. In contrast, most posts in the owners' thread indicate a high degree of satisfaction with the screen. Am I safe to assume that these issues are relatively uncommon?

My screen's fine, just poor fine contrast which I attribute to the matte screen. Much richer color when compared with my wsxga Inspiron with a gloss screen.

    Thanks.

Can anyone with the 120GB 7200RPM drive comment on the model of drive used?

    Edit

I finally got a tech support rep who actually knew their stuff; it seems that Dell is using a Seagate drive for this particular configuration. While the rep couldn't give me Seagate's part number, the only drive that fits the bill is the Momentus 7200.2 ST9120823AS.

Lenovo is still using last-gen 7200.1's and won't give you OEM OS media even if you ask. I think they've made up my mind for me.

The hard drive manufacturer could change at any time. Sometimes they use multiple suppliers and put different drives in different units. I mean it may only be one drive right now, but there's no guarantee or anything. If you really want a specific drive, you might be better off buying the drive yourself at newegg or something.

Yup, that is the same harddrive that is in my D630.

    Very fast.
