    Hi folks:

Has anyone experienced a loud buzzer sound from their Vostro, or any laptop for that matter?

Here's what happened. I have a Vostro 1500 with XP O/S that's loaded with a CAD software. Within this CAD software, you are able to do a CTRL+select to select multiple items as you would do in Windows folder environment. Well, in the CAD software, each of those selections require some amount of processor activity. Apparently, I was selecting way ahead of the processor's ability to keep up. Suddenly, I hear this loud split-second buzzer sound coming out of the speakers. I was quite startled by this unexpected sound. I had Windows volume set at a low level, but this sound seemed to be independent of that setting. It certainly wasn't a Windows sound. It was a generic buzzer sound.

I tried the above CTRL+select again since then. Again my selections were ahead of the processor, but I did not dare go too far ahead as I did previously. I did not experience the buzzer sound when I was more reasonable about my rate of selection. On my desktop, I'd do the same thing, but without any buzzer sound. Is there something in the Vostro 1500 that acts as a warning sound?

    Thanks for your response.

You can probably get it to stop by disabling pc beep. But i don't remember how to do that. And one day those beeps might come in handy if your computer won't start.

Double click on the little speaker in the systray to bring up the Windows Volume control. Click on "Options" and then check "Advanced Controls". This will enable a button under the Master Volume, click that and check the "Mute PC Beep" box.

It might beep 5 times at you. Looking in your manual or online would then tell (for example - made this example up :p) that 5 beeps means there is something wrong with your video card and the system can't finish starting up because of it.

The beeping would be handy in this case because if nothing can be displayed on the screen, the computer needs a way to tell you what's wrong with it.

There are different ways of disabling the beeping. Try searching google for disable pc beep. Disable it, then run your CAD program again and see if you still have the beeping issue. If you disable the beep, and still hear the noise when you're working in your CAD program then it's caused by something else (and you should go turn pc beeping back on).

Error beeps are BIOS controlled, this beeps while in Windows are software controlled (in most situations). So if you disable your PC Beep in Windows, you *should* still get BIOS error beeps.
