Hi guys,
after stalking these forums for the better part of the year, I finally got rid of my old laptop and got the XPS M1210. And the decision was not without trepidation, for there were wonderful notebooks available at powernotebooks, discountlaptops, etc. which have gotten rave reviews (especially the Asus s96 and Compal HEL80).
My (dad's) laptop before this was the Compan nx6000 series with a ATI 9600 graphics card. And my dad also has the Thinkpad R51e - so here is a listing of why I love my laptop. No photos - there are plenty out there (search for m1210 on flickr)
Config: 1.83 Core 2 Duo (no webcam)
1GB Ram
60 GB HDD
DVD writer
Nvidia 7400
bluetooth, wifi, yada yada yada
1 year completecover (read coffee-resistant warranty)
Price: ~1400 dollars (64000 rupees in India. time to delivery - 12 days)
1. Great build quality!! I banged my thinkpad and this laptop (with my fist) - same toughness. However, the hinges on the XPS are not metal, that could be something to watch out for.
2. Looks good - no doubt. especially the gray cover with the XPS lettering, gets attention everytime. The inside is OK, not too bad
3. Holy cow - it is light!! I mean the thinkpads are light, but this is wow - as light as a notebook !
4. Heat - kept the machine running for 2 days straight including the World of Warcraft client (playing for 2-3 hours at a time). the left side has the cooling vent, which lets out pretty warm air.
However the base of the laptop was not very warm. Compared to my old Compaq which could fry an egg.
5. There was NOT too much junk software - just a wee bit. Anyway I promptly installed TinyXP rev05. The driver CD provided with the laptop is very nice.
5. 5 Incidentally, the packing was quite good - it reminded me of Apple. Especially the inside XPS Black Box with all the stuff.
6. Graphics - aha, point of contention. I get 50-60 fps on World of Warcraft ( 40-50 inside Orgrimmar). Its pretty good and sufficient for me - there are others who have run Half Life 2 at a good resolution.
7. Nice touchpad - I like the vertical and horizontal scrolling features.
8. Complete cover - it was expensive, but I think it will be worth it. I dont think it is needed for more than a year, cos by the time the cost of existing components (1G RAM, 60 HDD, DVD+-RW) would have fallen too low to warrant the extra cost.
hope you make the right choice.

regarding the complete cover: it doesn't only cover the mentioned components, it also replaces ur laptop without questions asked if say u drop it into the bath tub or from the 30th floor (at least that's wot the dude at dell told me).
oh well, it wasn't like i PICKED the 3 years complete cover anyways as i got it during a special promotion (T2300E, 100gb 5400rpm, 1gb ram, geforce 7400, webcam, 3 yrs complete cover for around US$1,340 (HK$10,399)) so i'm happy -
