I'm not laptop savvy, and I ordered a 1520 last month which should be here late this month. I ordered the 256MB nVIDIA 8600GT with it. Which should be fun.

Will there eventually be an equivalent GPU card to the 7950GTX (or better) in the future that can be user installed in the 1520 or 1720? Perhaps a 512MB 8950 GTX or something? hehe

Or would such an upgrade be likely restricted to the 1720? I was reading how someone put a 512MB 7950GTX in their 1705.

Or are GPUs on laptops pretty much integrated?

Upgrading from Dell: from what i know thats only the xps line with another hefty price tag.

Upgrading laptop cards is only when it is an MXM card.

and about the possibility of better graphics cards....the 1720 series. yes there probably will be. but the 1520 probably met its end with the 8600gt.

According to Nvidia, their new high end card, replacing the 7950 even, is the 8700m, soon to be released. The exact same card as the 8600, overclocked. There is no reason why this card can't be added with just a minor price change.

I don't think upgrading the 8600M GT to the 8700M GT will be a big deal. I'd rather keep the 8600M GT or upgrade to the 8800M.

The 1520 will actually be my brother's when he goes to college soon and I'll be ordering mine in like October. I am hoping that Dell makes a bold move and puts the 8800M into the 1720. Although, this would greatly increase the price..

Well, it might very well show up in the XPS refresh. It should be around that time or before October even. A new 1710 version maybe?

The current new XPS is a weak gaming machine with the 8400 option.

The 8700 would be good for anyone who hasn't yet purchased. It might be offered at anytime too as Nvidia is bringing it out now.
