Okay, here's how things started, I was downloading the latest WoW patch, and oh noes! A hard disc read/write error!
After much trouble with diagnostic software, further errors, bad sectors, etc.... I unfortunately come to the conclusion that my hard drive is indeed in it's death throes.
First things first, I check my warranty from Dell, knowing that I opted out of all warranty options, and all it says is I get tech support.
After doing some shopping for a new hard drive, I am reminded to check to see if the manufacturers warranty is still valid, and while the Dell site tells me pre-existing manufacturers warranties are still valid on parts in your machine, Seagate unfortunately tells me that since my hard drive was purchased as a component that the manufacturers warranty is nonexistant.
So, sad and disappointed about the upcoming $100 hole in my pocket (while also somewhat joyed at getting more storage space), I decide to go back to Dell and contact them anyways.
Turns out, I somehow missed the fact that I have a 1 year hardware warranty from Dell, and after a 5 minute chat session, they are shipping me a brand new hard drive, and I have 10 days after receiving the new one to keep the old hard drive so I can back up all my data before I have to send it back. The support agent was polite, prompt, and appeared to know exactly what she was talking about, even ensuring I still had all the right recovery and driver disks and that I had the technical skill to install the new hard drive myself. I am so glad that I don't have to send my whole laptop to Dell or have someone come over and install it for me.

Glad to hear a positive tech support story!
I had the hard drive on my HP go out, and they mailed me a replacement, along with a sheet of paper explaining how to replace it.
It was a breeze swapping out the hard drive, and I was also thrilled I didn't have to go without my lappy.
Always nice to find out you didn't have to spend extra $$$! -
Good to hear.. right now im stuck...they said they would repair mine.. I have a clump of dead pixels but ZERO back light bleeding and I would lose the notebook for 10-14 days which is far too much for a uni student >.<

I also have nothing but good things to say about Dell's tech support. I called them today regarding a small bulge in the media bar cover and flimsy hinge covers and without hesitation they offered me to send me new ones via express delivery
Same thing with my ac adapter. I had this tingling sensation on my palm rest surface and called Dell tech support. One day later i got my new 3 pronged adapter. Didn't have to send anything back btw. So thumbs up for Dell's support
Hope that they don't cut edges on support regarding their upcoming money saving plans :/
A Positive Tech Support Story :)
