are the 9800 much much better than the 8800s?

i have had some nasty over heating problems with my 8800s recently and they are offering to replace my graphics cards with new or refurbed 8800s, im pretty good at arguing the toss and reckon i can blag an upgrade to the 9800s, just wondered how much of an improvement they are !

    thanks :D

Which model are you referring to? GTX, GT, GTS, GS?? The 9800M GTX has the same clocks as the 8800M GTX except 16 more shaders. While some 9800M GTS are 55nm (some are 65nm) but all are OCed compared to 8800M GTS (65nm).

I quess that he has a XPS M1730, wich comes with GT and GTX only.
9800M GT is similar (identical) with 8800M GTX, but is a bit cooler. 9800M GTX is better than 8800M GTX/9800M GT thanks to the shaders, but it's hotter than 9800M GT.

So, you better try your luck and ask for the 9800. It will either run cooler or you'll get better performance! Pull the trigger!!
