    Hello,

What is the difference between the Dell Inspiron 1705 and 9400? On the website it seems they have the same specs, but the 9400 is much cheaper; a configuration that cost $1600 on the 1705 cost about $1200 on the 9400! What is going on?

they are basically the same thing. the only difference is you can get Windows XP Media Center on the e1705.

With Dell coupons the prize of the e1705 matches the 9400. if you call in, you may be able to get even a better deal.

    Good Luck!!!

There's hardware differences - primarily the ability to use a docking station with the 9400, which you cannot use with the 1705. 9400s are targeted at business users. Visit Dell and compare the two.

Actually Kegobeer (and i am farely certain i am correct here) there is NO Difference. BOTH have the optional Notebook Expansion Dock (USB 2.0). The docking station is only for use on the Latitude and Precision line of laptops.

While they targeted to business (thus the name change e1705=9400) the only difference is the fact that you cannot get Media Center 05 on the 9400. I wanted to make sure i was providing accurate info so i checked online before this post - so unless i am blind (which my wife DOES say i am deaf and blind) -lol- i think this is accurate.

You're right, I was thinking about the Latitude docking port. I believe the 9400/1705 motherboard has the port (the cutout is on the bottom of the laptop) but I'm not about to open up my 1705 to look.

Well, i always do it online first, apply coupon codes, etc to get my lowest cost. Then call in, ask them for there best price. If they come in higher, just tell them you have it configured with a lower cost. Tell them that if they can beat your online cost by $100 you'll buy it right there on the phone.

    Worked for me!

Here in the uk the i9400 is targeted at home users and the E1705 is at the business side of the things.

I might be wrong but I think when you order from the small business site your lappy won't come with all the excess bloatware Dell puts on their home machines. I've read that business machines come basically with a basic XP install with, I'm not sure if that applies only to the Latitude line or the Inspiron line as well.

The 9400/1705 does not have a docking port. You can use a USB 2.0 docking station, but you lose your DVI output.
